Giardini breaks school mark with 6 goals in win over Hesston
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team rolled to an easy 12-0 win over Hesston in Region VI play in a contest that saw freshman Shala Giardini shatter the school record for goals in a season. Giardini scored 6 times in the win to break a tie she had with Yesenia Garcia, who scored 28 goals just last year. The 6 goals give Giardini 34 on the year with at least 8 more games to be played this year by the Cougars. Giardini had tied the mark in a 3-0 win over Neosho Friday night at Memorial Stadium at Great Bend High School. Barton is now 9-2 overall this year and 7-0 in Region VI play. Barton will take to the road for the next 2 games, traveling to Cloud County and Hutchinson.

Highlights
It took just more than 30 minutes for Giardini to break the deadlock she had with Garcia heading into the game. But once she broke through, Giardini kept going. An unassisted goal in the 30th minute set the record and gave Barton a 3-0 lead. In the final 15 minutes of the opening half, Giardini added two more goals for a 5-0 Barton lead. Giardini scored three more times in the opening 25 minutes of the 2nd half as Barton built a 9-0 lead on its way to the win.

Theresa Crane added a pair of goals in the win – the 1st two of the match – and sophomore defender Whitney Smith scored her 1st goal of the season. Danielle Mayo, Larami Klein, and Flavia Bernardes each added a goal in the win. Bernardes also had a pair of assists. The Cougars fired 30 shots on goal during the contest while Hesston put just 1 shot on goal.

In the 3-0 blanking of Neosho, Bernardes got the Cougars on the board 8 minutes into the game and that is where the scored stayed through half. Giardini scored her 28th goal of the season to tie Garcia 7 minutes into the 2nd half on Crane’s 2nd assist of the game. Cougar sophomore defender Ailie Freel scored her 1st goal of the season – the 2nd of her career – to cap the scoring at 3-0.
