Barton rolls into semifinals with win over Coffeyville
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team moved into the semifinals of the Region VI Championships with a 6-0 win over Coffeyville Monday. Barton won the opening round contest of the post-season at Cougar Fields in Great Bend in dominating fashion as Coffeyville failed to get off a shot the entire contest. The win gives the Cougars a 16-3 record and pits them against Butler in the semifinals Saturday at Hummer Park in Topeka. Barton is the No. 2 seed in the event while Butler is the 3rd seed. All of the top 4 seeds moved into the semifinals with 1st round wins.

Highlights
Barton led nearly the entire 90 minutes of play, scoring just 2 minutes into the contest. Danielle Mayo scored the goal on an assist from Jaime Havran. Mayo added a 2nd goal 10 minutes into the contest on a pass and go from Shala Giardini for a 2-0 lead. Giardini rounded out the 1st half scoring with a goal off a rebound from a Theresa Crane shot midway through the opening half.

Barton scored twice again in the early stages of the 2nd half as Crane found the net on a pass in the box from Flavia Bernardes just 17 seconds into the 2nd half. Barton made it 5-0 when Ailie Freel scored off a pass from Crane, who had received the ball off a corner kick. Giardini rounded out the scoring with her nation-leading 58th goal of the season on a thru ball from Whitney Smith.

Barton moves on to battle with Butler in the semifinals as all four powerhouses in the region moved on. Barton will take its 16-3 record against Butler and its 15-5-1 mark. The other semifinal will pit No. 1 Hutchinson with an unbeaten mark of 16-0-1 against the 4th seed Johnson County and its 13-6 mark. Hutch and Johnson will start things with an 11 am kick off at Hummer Park in Topeka with the Barton-Butler game to follow at 1:30 pm. In matchups earlier this year, Barton beat Butler 4-3 a couple of weeks ago while Hutch beat Johnson 2-1 the same weekend.

The winner will meet Sunday at Noon for the Region VI Championship.
