Cougars wrap up regular season with 12-0 blanking of Allen County
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team ended its regular season in impressive fashion, posting a 12-0 win over Allen County to conclude the season with a 15-3 record. Barton finished 2nd in the Jayhawk Conference and will take the No. 2 seed into the Region VI playoffs next week. Barton will host Coffeyville Monday to open post season action. The contest will get started at 2 pm at Cougar Fields on the campus of Barton.
Highlights
Barton led 1-0 on a Theresa Crane goal 4 minutes into the contest. That is where the game stayed until a flurry of goals midway through the half put Barton in control. Barton scored 4 times in a 12-minute stretch – 2 goals by the nation’s leading scorer Shala Giardini – to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead. Barton pushed the lead to 6-0 by half on a Whitney Smith goal.
The Cougars continued to pull away during the 2nd half, reaching double figures in scoring for the 4th time this season. Giardini ended the game with 4 goals to give her 56 on the year. Crane had 2 goals for the Cougars as did Smith. It was the 1st in Smith’s career – a defender for the Cougars – she scored 2 goals in a game. Smith also had 2 assists in the win. Amanda Neuschafer, Danielle Mayo, Laramie Klein, and Alejandra Martinez all had goals in the win as well.
Flavia Bernardes continued to add to her single season assists record for the Cougars with 3 more to give her 30 on the season.
Barton will take on Coffeyville to start Region VI action Monday. The two teams met at the same venue earlier this season with the Cougars recording a 10-0 win over the Red Ravens.
