Cougars earn big Jayhawk win over Johnson; Bernardes ties assist mark
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team scored one of its biggest wins of the season this past weekend with a 5-2 win over Johnson County in Jayhawk Conference action. The Cougars exploded for 4 1st half goals in the road win at Overland Park, which kept the Cougars in the hunt for the Jayhawk Conference title. Barton is now 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the Jayhawk. Hutchinson leads at 8-0 with Butler 6-1 and Johnson 8-2.
Highlights
The opening half was a scoring free-for-all as the two teams combined for 6 goals. The Cougars scored the opening goal on a header by Ailie Freel off a Flavia Bernardes corner kick 20 minutes into the game. It would be the 1st of 4 assists for Bernardes, who now has 23 on the season and has tied Yesenia Garcia’s season record set last year. That goal cut loose the spree as all 6 1st half goals were scored in a matter of 15 minutes.
Johnson tied it at 1-all less than 2 minutes after Barton took the 1-0 lead but the Cougars clawed back in front on a Jazsmyne Beverly goal with 15 minutes left in the half on an assists from Theresa Crane. Crane added a goal 1 minute later as Bernardes collected her 2nd assist of the game, giving Barton a 3-1 lead.
With just less than 10 minutes left in the opening half Johnson cut it to 3-2 but the Cougars scored 22 seconds later as Shala Giardini got in the scoring mix from Bernardes and a 4-2 halftime lead. The two hooked up for the game’s only 2nd half goal with 12 minutes to play for the 5-2 final.
Bernardes tied Garcia’s record with the final assists for 23 in a season with Crane right behind at 20. Bernardes is tied for the NJCAA lead in assists while Crane is currently 3rd. One of those two will also end with the career mark as they currently are 1-2 in the category. Crane has 38 career assists and Bernardes 36.
Barton will travel to Garden City for a contest Wednesday before returning home for another big Jayhawk battle Saturday against Butler. The contest in Garden, 1-7 in the Jayhawk and 2-8 overall, will kick at 5 pm. Barton’s contest Saturday at Cougar Fields will be at 2 pm.
