Barton falls to Hutch in battle of Jayhawk unbeatens
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team lost its first conference game of the season in a battle of Jayhawk Conference unbeatens in Hutchinson Friday, 3-1. Shala Giardini scored Barton’s only goal of the game, giving her a nation-leading 41 on the season .The Cougars fall to 7-1 in Region VI action and 10-3 overall. Hutch is now one of 2 unbeatens remaining with an 8-0 region record. The Blue Dragons are also unbeaten overall at 10-0-1. Barton will be back on the field Thursday when they host Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa in non conference play. The game will be at Great Bend High School’s Memorial Stadium at 6 pm.
Highlights
The Cougars were in the contest until the final 3 minutes when Hutchinson added a goal for the final 3-1 margin. Hutch took a 1-0 lead midway through the opening half when Stephanie Franz scored on a Caitlyn Conley assist 23:05 into the game. It didn’t take Barton long to answer the cal as Giardini scored for the 41st time this season on an assist from Danielle Mayo less than 2 minutes later.
The Blue Dragons scored in the final 3 minutes of the opening half to take a 2-1 lead into intermission when Chelsea Myers put the ball into net for and a Hutch lead. Neither team could break through in the 2nd half until Hutch finally scored with just 2:48 remaining.
Barton will get a break from conference play Thursday when the Cougars host Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa. The contest will start at 6 pm at Great Bend High School’s Memorial Field.
