Barton back in thick of Jayhawk title race with win over Johnson County
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team continued its most successful season to date with one of the biggest wins in school history Saturday afternoon at Cougar Fields. The Cougars knocked off Johnson County – previously unbeaten in the Jayhawk Conference – by a slim 1-0 score. In the process, Barton vaulted itself back in the thick of the race for the Jayhawk Conference regular season title. The Cougars are 7-1 in the Jayhawk – 1 of 4 teams with 1 loss. Johnson fell to 6-1. Butler also beat previously unbeaten Hutchinson Saturday. Butler is now 7-1 in the Jayhawk and Hutchinson 8-1. Barton has now won 6 straight games and is 13-3 for the season.
Highlights
The lone goal of the contest came midway through the opening half of play when Theresa Crane put a header in the net off a free kick from Sarah Whiteside. That goal would hold up in a defensive battled between the two schools.
The two teams combined for just 13 shots on goal with Johnson putting 7 on goal and Barton 6. All 7 of Johnson’s shots were saved by Barton goalkeeper Klarissa Harter. Harter posted her 8th shutout of the season. The only goal she has allowed in the past 6 games came on a penalty kick. The Cougars played the game without its leading scorer as Yesenia Garcia missed the game due to family reasons.
Earlier in the week Barton posted an easy 9-1 in at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa. Crane netted 3 goals in that win to go along with 3 assists. Flavia Bernardes added 2 goals and 2 assists. Betsy Dreiling, Nataleigh Cliff and Nichole Gilmore each had a goal and an assist. Jaszmyne Beverly also had a goal and Paige Christiansen an assist. Tonkawa’s only goal was on a penalty kick.
The Cougars will have a pair of big games again this week as Barton travels to Neosho Wednesday to take on the Panthers who are right behind the top 4 teams in the conference with a 5-2-1 Jayhawk mark. Barton will end the week Saturday with a trip to El Dorado to take on Butler at Noon.
