Cougars shutout 4th straight foe; Garcia gets school mark, Cougars break win mark
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team has been explosive offensively at times this year – and Saturday was no different – but the defense has been just as impressive. Barton recorded its 4th straight shutout and 7th of the season with a 7-0 win over Cloud County in Jayhawk Conference action at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. In the process, Great Bend sophomore Yesenia Garcia broke the school record for most goals in a career. The win was the 11th on the season for Barton, which is the most in school history. The win also keeps Barton (11-3) in the hunt for its 1st Jayhawk Conference title with a 6-1 record in the conference. The Cougars will need some help to win that title but can do itself some good Saturday when Johnson County (5-0 in the Jayhawk) visits Cougar Fields. Before that contest, Barton will travel to Oklahoma for a non conference game Wednesday.

Highlights
With a gusty wind at its back in the opening half, Barton took advantage and grabbed control of the contest. The Cougars scored 4 times in a 7-minute span early in the contest. Less than 10 minutes in Flavia Bernardes gave Barton a 1-0 lead on an assist from Garcia. Garcia broke Elaine Fontes’ record of 36 career goals on a penalty kick just 1 minute later. Sara Whiteside and Paige Christiansen added goals within the next 6 minutes as Barton bullied its way to a 4-0 lead. Garcia would add her 38th career goal in closing seconds of the 1st half. Bernardes and Christiansen added 2nd half goals as Barton cruised to the win.

Garcia continues to dominate this year with her 2 goals and 3 assists in the win. She now has 17 goals and 18 assists this year – team high’s in both categories. Theresa Crane (15), Bernardes (13), and Nataleigh Cliff (12) also all have double digit goals this year for a Cougar team that has shattered the record for most goals in a season.

Barton will travel to Tonkawa, Oklahoma to play Northern Oklahoma Wednesday in non conference play.
