Cougars split road games at Laramie, Blue River
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team split games over an extended weekend for them, losing at No. 11 Laramie County (Wyom) Saturday before scoring a win at Blue River (Mo) Monday. The split of road games give Barton a 4-2 record this season. The Cougars will start Jayahwk Conference action Wednesday when Barton hosts Dodge City in a 2 pm start at Cougar Fields.

Highlights
Barton battled the 11th ranked Eagles to one of its toughest games to date, losing 2-0. Laramie (4-1) lost at No. 10 Young Harris by a 2-1 score to start the season. The Eagles also own a 3-1 win over No. 13 Iowa Central – the next closest score along with Cougars 2-0 loss. In Laramie’s other two wins a 5-0 win over Butler was the next closest contest.

Laramie scored in the opening 5 minutes of the 1st half to grab a 1-0 lead. The scored stayed that way until just 25 minutes remained in the contest before the Eagles put the ball in the net again for the 2-0 win. Klarissa Harter recorded 14 saves in the loss. Barton put just 3 shots of its own on goal.

The Cougars returned to the road Monday for a trip to Kansas City to take on Blue River. Barton won that battle by a 1-0 margin, thanks to some good defense by the Cougars – allowing just 2 shots on goal – and a Sarah Whiteside goal in the opening half. Whiteside scored on an assist from Paige Christiansen midway through the opening half and that score stood up the rest of the way.

Barton will battle Dodge to open Jayhawk in a match up that proved entertaining last season. The Cougars and Conquistadors did battle twice last year, tying 1-1 in the regular season and losing to Dodge 3-2 in overtime in the opening round of the Region VI playoffs in Dodge City.
