Barton women capture 1st Jayhawk title; Garcia breaks another record
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team put the finishing touches on the school’s 1st Jayhawk Conference title with a 12-0 win at Independence Tuesday afternoon. The win in the final regular season game of the year gave Barton a 10-1 mark in the conference and a 16-3 overall record. The Cougars end the regular season with a school record 9-game winning streak. In the process, Yesenia Garcia scored 4 goals to break the single-season record at Barton. The Cougars will now wait for the rest of the conference to conclude regular season play before they will know who their 1st round opponent will be. Barton will be the No. 1 seed in the Region VI playoffs and will host the No. 8 seed Tuesday at 1 pm at Cougar Fields. The Cougars will play Allen County if the Red Devils defeat Johnson Thursday. If Allen loses and Coffeyville beats Indy, the Cougars will host the Coffeyville.

Highlights
Barton had very little trouble with the Pirates, who are currently next to last in the conference. Barton scored 7 times in the opening half behind a 4-goal half from Garcia. The Great Bend sophomore broke the only offensive record she didn’t have when she scored her 4th goal in the opening half. That gave her 24 for the season, besting the mark of 23 by Elaine Fontes in 2005. Garcia now holds the record for most goals in a game, season and career; most assists in a game, season, career; and most points in a game, season, and career. Her single-season goal record is not a lock, however, as teammate Theresa Crane is close behind with 22 goals after her 2-goal contest at Indy Tuesday. That total currently puts her 3rd in a single season at Barton, passing the 21 goals by Garcia last year.

Garcia started the game with a goal just 10 minutes in and scored her 4th goal 23 minutes into the game as Barton exploded for a 5-0 lead at the midway point of the opening half. Nataleigh Cliff added a goal in that span. Sarah Whiteside and Crane both scored in the final 5 minutes of the half for a 7-0 lead. The Cougars added goals from Flavia Bernardes, Jaszmyne Beverly, Crane, Paige Christiansen, and Cliff in the 2nd half for the 12-0 win – the 3rd time this year Barton has scored double digits in a contest.
