Cougars blank Butler; one win from 1st Jayhawk Conference crown
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team accolades continued Saturday with a win over a ranked opponent on the road as Barton won a 2-0 decision over No. 13 Butler Saturday afternoon in El Dorado. The win – coupled with a Hutchinson-Johnson County tie on Sunday – put the Cougars within a single win of capturing the schools 1st Jayhawk Conference title. Barton (15-3) is currently atop the Jayhawk standings with a 9-1 record. Hutchinson is next at 8-1-1 with Johnson 7-1-1. Butler is now 8-2. The Cougars can secure that title with a win at Independence Tuesday against the Pirates, who are 1-8 in the Jayhawk and 2-13 overall. That would also secure the No. 1 seed for Barton in the upcoming Region VI playoffs. The Cougars will open that contest at home Tuesday, Oct. 28 against a yet to be determined opponent at 1 pm. Earlier in the week, Barton captured a 3- 0 win over Neosho.

Highlights
Barton scored once in each half off the foot of sophomore standout Yesenia Garcia. Garcia scored her 19th and 20th goals of the season in the win, matching her for the team lead with freshman Theresa Crane. Both are currently 3rd on the school charts for single season goals. Garcia scored 21 goals last season and Elaine Fontes 23 in 2005.

Garcia scored the opening goal on an assist from Crane on a cross into the box. It was Crane’s 13th assists this season, 2nd on the team to Garcia’s 19. Both are the top two marks for a single season. That goal came 30 minutes into the contest and that is how the match went to half. Garcia added some cushion to the lead in the opening 10 minutes of the 2nd half when she scored on a penalty kick for the 2-0 lead and eventual final tally.

The win continued Barton’s record-setting season of wins in a year that was 10 heading into this season. The Cougars furthered other season-shattering marks by recording their 10th shutout and pushing the season goal total 90 – an average of 5 per contest. It also furthered a school record winning streak to 8 games.

Barton won 3-0 at Neosho, finally shaking the pesky Panthers late in the 2nd half. Crane scored in the opening half off an assist from Nataleigh Cliff just 6 minutes into the contest with a chip over the keeper. That is how the game stayed until halftime. In the 2nd half Garcia gave Barton a 2-0 lead when she took a thru ball from Paige Christiansen and put it in the net. Garcia got her 19th assist of the year on the final goal – a cross into the box to Cliff, who scored her 14th goal of the season.

Barton will look to wrap up that 1st Jayhawk title Tuesday in Independence in a game that was originally scheduled for Thursday but moved up to allow Indy to get a makeup game in before the end of the year and the seeding for the Region VI tournament. Barton will host a playoff game Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 1 pm against a team to be determined. If Barton wins’ Tuesday the Cougars will play either Allen County, Coffeyville, or Cloud County. If the Cougars lose they will more than likely face Cowley.
