Sailer named Coach the Year; Garcia Player of the Year; 5 Cougars named 1st team
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team was rewarded for an outstanding regular season with the Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and 5 Cougars selected to the 1st team. Bryan Sailer earned his 1st Coach of the Year award in his 2nd season at Barton while Great Bend sophomore Yesenia Garcia was tabbed as the Player of the Year in the conference. She was joined on the 1st team by Flavia Bernardes, Sara Whiteside, Amber Hull, and goalkeeper Klarissa Harter. Barton will attempt to keep its most successful soccer season in school history going this weekend. Barton will be vying for its 1st ever trip to the Region VI finals when the Cougars play Butler Saturday in Topeka.
Yesenia Garcia – Sophomore – Great Bend
Jayhawk Player of the Year; 1st team All Conference Forward
Garcia has had a record setting season and career at Barton with the sophomore holding all the scoring records in school history. She is a repeat selection to the Jayhawk Conference 1st team. This season she set the mark for most goals in a season as well as most assists in a season. Garcia has 25 goals this season – besting the old record of 23 set by Elaine Fontes in 2005. She smashed the assist record with 22 so far this year. The old mark was just 7. Last season Garcia scored 21 goals and had 2 assists. She also scored 7 goals in a game last year for the single-game mark. Her career marks are 46 goals and 24 assists.
Klarissa Harter – Sophomore – Greeley, Colorado
1st team All Conference Goalkeeper
Harter has allowed just 13 goals this season in Barton’s 20 games, recording 81 saves in the process. Harter posted 10 shutouts this season and shared in another one. The 10 shutouts this season and 14 for her career are both school records at Barton.
Flavia Bernardes – Freshman – Brazil
1st team All Conference Midfield
Bernardes has scored 17 goals for the Cougars this season and added 12 assists. She was especially effective in conference games where she scored 10 goals and added 8 assists in 11 contests. The 17 goals so far this year places her tied for 6th all-time in a single season at Barton. The 11 assists is currently the 3rd best mark ever.
Sara Whiteside – Sophomore – Overland Park
1st team All Conference Defender
Whiteside is also a repeat all conference pick but this year she was selected to the 1st team after being named 2nd team all conference as a freshman. Whiteside was part of a backline that limited opponents shots this season, allowing just 148 total shots on the year of which 95 were on goal – an average of less than 5 per contest. Whiteside added 4 goals and 6 assists from her backline spot as well.
Amber Hull – Freshman – Arvada, Colorado
1st team All Conference Defender
Hull was also part of the stellar backline that allowed foes just 13 goals on the season. That defense got even better as the year went along, allowing just 1 goal in the final 9 regular season games of the year. The 13 goals allowed is the lowest in school history at Barton as well as the 4 consecutive shutouts Barton posted on 2 different occasions. She also has 2 goals and an assist.
Nataleigh Cliff – Freshman – England
2nd team All Conference Forward
Cliff has been another high scoring Cougar, recording 17 goals as well, to put her tied for 6th in single season goals at Barton along with Bernardes. Cliff also added double digit assists with 11, which is 4th best all-time for the Cougars.
Theresa Crane – Freshman – Herriman, Utah
2nd team All Conference Midfield
Crane has been the 2nd most prolific scorer for the Cougars this season close behind Garcia with 23 goals and 17 assists. Those 23 goals ties her for 2nd all-time with Fontes as she battles with Garcia for the single-season school record. The 17 assists is the 2nd highest total in school history as well.
Bryan Sailer
Coach of the Year
Sailer and the Cougars have surpassed all expectations this season with a record-setting season at Barton. The Cougars won the Jayhawk Conference for the 1st time in school history and shattered the win total for a season that had stood at 10 with the 17 wins so far this season in his 2nd year at the helm of the Cougars. Sailer is currently 27-11-2 in his 2 years. Barton entered the rankings for the 1st time ever, currently at No. 15 as the school vies for its 1st Region VI title game appearance when the Cougars square off with Butler Saturday at 4 pm in the Region VI semifinals.
Barton shattered the records books this year on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The Cougars have scored 108 goals this season and given up just 13. The 108 goals scored more than doubled the old record of 51 set in 2005. On 3 occasions this year the Cougars topped the double digit mark including a record 14 goals in one game. The current 10-game winning the Cougars are riding is also a school record.
Two Cougars – Garcia and Crane – have scored more goals this season than the entire Barton team did in 3 of Barton’s 1st 4 seasons when the school started soccer in 2001. Only the 2003 team that scored 35 goals had more than 21 goals for the entire season. Garcia has 25 and Crane 23 this year.
