Barton defeats Northern Oklahoma; winning streak at 5
The Barton County Community College women’s soccer team continued its winning ways Wednesday afternoon, knocking off Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa by a 3-1 score on a chilly, windy day at Cougar Fields. Barton scored a late goal in the opening half, then built its lead to 3-0 on the way to the 5th straight win for the Cougars – extending their school record. Barton is now 7-4 for the season and will step back into Jayhawk Conference action Saturday when Allen County visits. Barton is 5-0 in the Jayhawk with 4 conference dates left. Allen County will bring a 2-6 Jayhawk record into the contest and a 2-11-1 overall mark.

Highlights
It looked as if the game was going to halftime scoreless before the Cougars got on the board in dramatic fashion. Playing into the 30 mph wind from the North the 1st half, Barton was able to put just 2 shots on goal. But the 2nd shot scored a goal for the Cougars with just 5 seconds left in the opening half. After a foul on Northern Oklahoma, Barton’s Alana James put the ball back in play with a free kick near midfield. James kick floated over the defenders that Elaine Fontes broke past after the kick. Fontes got control of the ball with only the goalkeeper to beat and drove it past her for the 1-0 with just 5 seconds to play.

The 2nd half belonged to a healing Regina Zink. The sophomore from Great Bend has been fighting injuries the past several games and is slowing getting better. She proved that with a career-high 2 goals in the final 45 minutes of action as Barton turned to play with the wind. She scored both goals in just a little more than 3 minutes of play. The 1st came on a nice assist from Robin Reidle 15 minutes into the 2nd half. The next came just 3:22 later when Zink blocked an attempted clear by a Ranger and found her self in the open with only the keeper to beat. Much like Fontes in the opening half, Zink drilled the ball in the back of the net for a 3-0 Barton lead.

The Cougars gave up a goal less than one minute later but Yacey Young collected 12 saves before the day was done, giving Barton the 3-1 win over the Rangers. Barton put just 7 shots on goal – 2 in the final minutes – but connected on 3 of them.
