Barton stays perfect in Jayhawk; runs winning streak to record-setting 4 games
The Barton County Community College women’s soccer team is experiencing the best stretch of soccer in the history of the 5 years of the program. The Cougars improved their winning streak to 4 games Sunday afternoon, breaking the old mark of 3. That win also kept the Cougars unbeaten in Jayhawk Conference action. All that occurred as Barton scored 4 second half goals to knock off Hutchinson, 4-1, at Cougars Fields. The Cougars are now 6-4 overall and a perfect 5-0 in Jayhawk play. Barton is one of just 2 unbeatens left in the conference.

Highlights
With the wind blowing at 30-40 mph hour from the South, the Cougars weren’t able to generate much offense heading into that wind in the opening half. Barton was able to muster just 1 shot in the opening 45 minutes of action as the Cougars fell behind by a 1-0 score at intermission.

The 2nd half was a totally different story. Barton fired 11 shots – 5 of them on goal – scoring 4 times. Elaine Fontes was nearly unstoppable yet again as the freshman from Brazil scored 3 of Barton’s 4 goals. The first goal of the game for Fontes set and new school record for goals in a season, which now stands at 21. The old mark of 18 was held by Richelle Galeaz set in 2003. Fontes is averaging 2.1 goals per contest this season. Fontes evened the score at 1-all with a goal on an assist from back Denise Schneider 12 minutes into the 2nd half.

The Cougars put the game away during a 10-minute stretch of play later in the half. Robin Reidle, 2nd to Fontes with 8 goals this year for the Cougars, gave Barton a 2-1 lead on an assist from Erica Seger with 21:50 to play. Fontes scored the final two goals of the game with 14:51 left and again with 11:06 to play. That gave the Cougars a 4-1 advantage and secured the win as Hutch got off just 1 shot the entire 2nd half playing into the wind.

Barton will attempt to run its winning streak to 5 games when Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa pays a visit to Cougars Fields Wednesday in a non-conference contest. Barton defeated Tonkawa 3-1 earlier this year. The Cougars next conference contest will be at home as well, taking on Allen County Saturday at 2 pm.
