Cougars
season ends with 2-0 loss to Hutch in Region VI playoffs
The
Barton County Community College women’s soccer team had several
highs during the 2005 season, but Monday afternoon was not one of
them. The Cougars lost their opening round game of the Region VI
Tournament, falling to Hutchinson, 2-0, ending Barton’s season
with an 8-7-1 record. The Cougars, who ran off 6 straight wins at
one point, were winless in the final four games of the season. Those
four games were played without the services of Elaine Fontes, who
scored a record 23 goals in the 1st 12 games of the year while Barton
built an 8-4 mark. Fontes missed the final four games of the year
after injuring her knee in a 6-0 win over Allen County. Fontes had
surgery Friday to repair 3 ligaments in her knee. Hutchinson (9-9)
moves on to play in the Region VI semifinals Saturday.
Highlights
The Cougars could never muster any offense in the contest as Barton
got off just 1 shot on goal the entire game. Hutchinson, meanwhile,
put 7 shots on goal and took an early 1-0 lead on a corner kick
that resulted in a goal for Megan Reffett off Ashley Salz’s
corner kick just 4:46 into the contest.
The
game stayed 1-0 in favor of the Blue Dragons until Hutchinson found
the net again with just less than 12 minutes to play for a 2-0 lead
that all but secured the win for Hutch. Barton was able to work
the ball into the Blue Dragons end of the field in the final 10
minutes but were never able to make the Hutch goalie do much work.
