Barton drops 3-0 contest to Butler in battle of Jayhawk unbeatens
The Barton County Community College women’s soccer team saw its string of 6 straight wins and a perfect Jayhawk Conference season come to an end Tuesday, dropping a 3-0 contest to Butler County at Cougar Fields. The Cougars fell to 6-1 in the Jayhawk while Butler locks up the conference title at 7-0. Barton played the game without its leading scorer Elaine Fontes, who missed the contest due to a knee injury. Her status in uncertain at this point as when she will return. Barton is now 8-5 while Butler, ranked No. 10 in the NJCAA, stays perfect at 14-0. Barton and Johnson County will square off for 2nd place in the Jayhawk when the two teams battle in Overland Park.

Highlights
The Cougars showed vast improvement from the 1st meeting with Butler County, giving the unbeaten Grizzlies all they can ask for. In the 1st meeting of the two clubs back early September, Barton lost an 8-0 decision. This time a pair of missed opportunities by Barton coupled with Butler taking advantage of a pair of opportunities made the difference in the game.

While Butler put 25 shots on goal and Barton official just 1, the Cougars had their chances. Butler’s 1st goal came after Barton goalkeeper Yacey Young had a save but the wet ball slipped through her hands, giving the Grizzlies a 2nd opportunity which Ashley Tatum took advantage of. The 2nd goal for the Grizzlies came when Barton blocked a ball into it’s own net.

Meanwhile Barton had a chance to score a couple of times in the 1st half. The 1st came on a free kick by Barton that landed in front of the Butler goal, but a pair of attempts and putting the ball in the net resulted in nothing. Later in the half, Regina Zink, one of the hottest goal scorers of late for Barton, missed an opportunity when her shot bounded off the left post.
