Cougars
get game-winner with 14 seconds left; remain unbeaten in Jayhawk
The Barton County Community College women’s soccer team has
been setting scoring records at a light speed pace this season but
none of the 31 goals up to Saturday’s final goal were near
as exciting as that 32nd goal of the season. It was that goal –
scored with just 14 seconds to play in regulation – that gave
the Cougars a dramatic 2-1 win at Neosho Saturday in Jayhawk Conference
play. A key win in Barton quest for a 1st round home game in the
Region VI playoffs as the Cougars remained unbeaten in Jayhawk play
at 3-0. Barton is 4-4 overall this season. Neosho fell to 4-2 in
the conference and 8-3 overall. Barton is one of just 3 unbeaten
teams in the conference with the top 4 getting home games.
Highlights
Coming off a school record 5 goal outing at Garden City, Fontes
scored both goals for Barton in Chanute. The freshman from Brazil
now has 17 goals on the season – just one shy of the school
record of 18 set by Richelle Galaez in 2003.
Neither
team scored in the opening half but Neosho grabbed 1-0 lead less
than 3 minutes into the 2nd half. Tasha Greene scored the goal for
the Panthers to give them a 1-0 advantage. Barton evened that scored
as Fontes scored her 1st goal of the game with just more than 25
minutes to play on a free kick. The game stayed tied at 1-all and
looked headed for overtime until the final few seconds. The Cougars
threw the ball and off a kick got it to Fontes who dribbled to the
goal, pivoted to free herself and drove home the game winner with
just 14 seconds to play.
Barton
has reached the halfway point of the season and has nearly as many
goals (32) as the school record set in 2003 (35). Barton and Fontes
– among other Cougars – are on pace to break several
school records as well as top 5 single season marks.
