Cougars
wrap up 3rd place in Jayhawk; home playoff game with tie at Dodge
The
Barton County Community College women’s soccer team finally
accomplished its goal of a home playoff game Wednesday afternoon
with a 1-1 tie at Dodge City. The tie gave the Cougars 3rd place
in the Jayhawk Conference, securing that home playoff game in the
final regular season game of the season. Barton had lost its last
2 games after running off 6 straight wins. The Cougars are now 8-6-1
overall this year and 6-2-1 in the Jayhawk. Dodge is now 8-7-2 and
5-3-1. The Cougars will play host to Hutchinson Monday afternoon
at 2 pm in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament.
Highlights
Barton County got off 6 more shots and the Conquistadors, but was
only able to put 6 of those shots on goal. Fortunately for the Cougars
one of those found the net late in the contest. Robin Reidle tied
the game at 1-all just 6 minutes into the 2nd half. Leah Benson
earned the assist on the goal for the Cougars. It was just the 6th
shot on goal for Barton out of 16 attempts. Dodge put half its shots
on goal, 5 of 10.
Dodge
had taken a 1-0 lead late in the 1st half, as Jennifer Schaaf scored
with just 8 minutes left the half. Dodge held that 1-0 lead for
just minutes before the Cougars were able to even it up. The goal
for Reidle was her 9th, tying her with Breanne Riggs for 3rd all-time
in Cougar history. Elaine Fontes, who is currently out Barton with
a knee injury has 23 goals this season to top the chart while Richelle
Galaez is 2nd with 18 during the 2003 season.
Barton
will now turn focus to Hutchinson, a team the Cougars defeated 4-1
earlier this year at Cougar Fields. That was a contest that saw
Fontes score 3 times. Her status for Monday is uncertain.
