Barton
stays unbeaten in West play; Fontes equals school record
The Barton County Community College women’s soccer team kept
pace with the leaders in the Jayhawk Conference Wednesday with a
5-0 shutout win over Cloud County Wednesday afternoon in Concordia.
The win moves the Cougars to 4-0 in the West and 5-4 overall this
season. It was also the 3rd straight win for Barton – matching
the longest stretch of wins in the 5-year history of the program.
Barton will go for its 4th straight win as well as a 5-0 start to
conference play Sunday when Hutchinson visits for a 3 pm start.
A win would all but assure Barton of a home playoff game to start
Region VI action at the end of the season.
Highlights
Barton struggled in the opening half, getting off 14 shots –
half of those on goal – and scoring just 1 goal. The lone
goal came off the foot of Robin Reidle on an assist from Adriana
Enriquez. That goal came with 16:25 into the contest and would remain
the only goal for quite some time. Barton held that 1-0 lead until
33 remained in the contest when the Cougars finally punched it in
net again on an unassisted goal from Erica Seger.
Fontes,
the 7th leading goal scorer in the NJCAA with 17 heading into the
week, scored her 18th goal of the season with 16 minutes to play.
That goal tied her with Richelle Galaez at the top of the all-time
chart at Barton County for a single-season. It is also Barton’s
career mark as Galaez played just 1 season for the Cougars. Fontes
still 6 regular season games and at least 1 playoff game to break
that record.
Enriquez
gave the Cougars a 4-0 lead with 11 minutes to play on an assist
from Seger and Margarita Castruita-Rincon made it 5-0 with 5 minutes
left in the contest. The Cougars are one of 3 unbeaten teams in
the conference along with Butler County and Johnson County. Hutchinson
is 3-2 in the Jayhawk.
