Cougars earn split, go 1-1 in Mid Kansas ShootOut
The Barton County Community College women’s soccer team defeated Northern Oklahoma on Saturday before falling to Iowa Central on Sunday, finishing the Mid Kansas ShootOut with a weekend record of 1-1. Barton defeated Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa by the final score of 3-1 with a women’s record crowd of 150 in attendance at Cougars Fields, then dropped the Iowa Central game by the score of 6-2. This weekend’s play moves the Cougars’ season record to 2-4. Barton County will be back in action at Garden City this Wednesday for a Jayhawk Conference battle.


Highlights
The Cougars kicked off their Mid Kansas Shootout schedule on Saturday with a big game against Northern Oklahoma. The game was defensive battle in the first half, with all the scoring coming in the second period. Barton’s Elaine Fontes put in the first goal of the game at 71:11 to give the Cougars the lead. Northern Oklahoma’s Allison Howard responded quickly, taking a pass from teammate Carey Cloud and scoring to tie the contest at 1-all with 72:17 gone by. Just 30 seconds later, Fontes put Barton back in front, scoring off of a penalty kick. She would fire in another penalty kick at 83:25 to seal the 3-1 victory for the Cougars.

Yacey Young faced just 5 shots on goal, stopping 4 of them. Barton only fired 6 shots on goal, but scored on half of them for the 3-1 win.

Barton finished up the weekend on Sunday against Iowa Central. Iowa Central started the scoring early in the first half, with Ashley Underwood putting a goal in off a rebound at 4:04. The Tritons continued to dominate the scoring with goals at 15:09, 31:13, and 32:51 before the Cougars scored their first. At 33:35, Barton got on the board with a Robin Reidle goal, assisted by Leah Benson. Iowa Central would get one more goal in the first half by Molly Hoskins at 42:21. Each team got one goal apiece in the second period. Twelve minutes into the last frame, Abbey Winkels scored from Amy Black to stretch the Iowa Central lead to 5. Elaine Fontes of the Cougars recorded the final goal of the contest at 84:26. Barton managed just 7 shots on goal to 16 from Iowa Central. The 6-2 loss dropped the Cougars record to 2-4 this season.
