Fontes earns Player of the Week Honors
Elaine Fontes of the Barton County Community College women’s soccer team has been named the NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. Fontes started off the week with a record setting performance at Garden City. She scored a team record 5 goals in the Cougars’ 9-0 victory. In the final game of the week, Fontes led Barton County to a 2-1 win over Neosho. She scored both the Cougars’ goals, including the game winner with 14 seconds left on the clock.

With victories over Garden City and Neosho, Barton ended the week a perfect 2-0. The boosted their overall record to 4-4 and stayed unbeaten in Conference play at 3-0. Her 5-goal output broke the old mark of 4 goals, tied most recently by Fontes’ teammate Robin Reidle earlier this year.

The Cougars will be back on the road on Wednesday, traveling to Concorida face Cloud County. On Sunday, they return home for the 1st time in two weeks with a conference match against Hutchinson. The contest with Hutchinson will start at 3 pm. Hutchinson will bring a 5-2 record overall and a 3-2 Jayhawk record to Cougar Fields. The Blue Dragons only conference losses are to nationally ranked Butler as well as Neosho.
