Barton
women start soccer season off with losses in Rochester Tourney
The Barton County Community College women’s soccer team dropped
the opening two games of the season to a pair of quality teams in
Rochester, Minn. over the weekend. The Cougars lost the season opener
to unbeaten (3-0) Rochester by a 4-2 score then fell 8-2 to the
College of DuPage (3-0) Sunday. The Cougars will open West play
and be at home for the 1st time this year when Coffeyville visits
Wednesday.
Highlights
The Cougars got their 2005 season off with a bang, scoring in the
opening 1:13 of the season. Elaine Fontes put Barton up 1-0 on an
assist from Adriana Enriquez across the field. The Cougars would
battle with Rochester to a 1-all tie at intermission. Rochester
pushed that lead to 2-1 early in the 2nd half but Fontes and Enriquez
hooked up again, this time quick pass and shot from the 18-foot
line passed the keeper for a 2-all game with just more than 35 minutes
to play. That would be Barton’s final goal, though, as Rochester
earned the 2-0 win.
Barton
put just 6 shots on goal with 2 getting into the net. Rochester
was able to put 14 shots on goal against the Cougars with Yacey
Young saving 10 of them.
Sunday
wasn’t as kind to Barton as the Cougars fell behind by a 4-1
count in the opening 20 minutes. Barton’s lone goal was another
Fontes goal about halfway through the opening half to make it 3-1.
In fact Fontes scored all 4 goals for the Cougars during the weekend.
