Cougars
earn All-Conference honors
The Barton County Community College women’s soccer team put
three players on the All Jayhawk Conference teams. Elaine Fontes
and Robin Reidle were named to the First Team, while Regina Zink
was voted onto the second team. The Cougars turned in a great year,
breaking many individual and team records. Barton finished the season
with a record of 8-7-1, ending with a loss to Hutchinson in the
first round of the Region VI playoffs. Barton ended the season 3rd
in the Jayhawk Conference.
Elaine
Fontes
Elaine turned in of the best single seasons in Barton history. She
broke many scoring records, despite her season being cut short by
a knee injury. With 49 points, she now holds the career and single
season mark, along with her 23 goal mark this year. Elaine also
recorded 10 points and 5 goals in a single game, breaking those
records as well. She did all that in just 12 games on the field
this season.
Coach
Jared Wilbanks comments on Fontes – “Elaine
is an extremely gifted player and is very deserving of the first-team
selection. She has broken many of the schools scoring records in
only her first season as a Lady Cougar, along with that she also
has the ability to change a game single handedly; which is a dangerous
thing in the women’s game.”
Robin
Reidle
Robin
has been a solid player throughout her Barton career. She used experience
and leadership to bring herself to the top of her game this season.
Robin also added her name to many of the lists in Barton’s
record book. She finished her career with 33 points and 14 goals,
good for fourth on both record lists. Reidel has the Barton record
for most goals in a game with 4 at one point this season before
teammate Fontes broke that record.
Coach
Jared Wilbanks comments on Reidle – “Robin
is a solid player and a hard worker on the practice and game fields.
She was a team captain and a leader by example for the team this
year; I am looking forward to seeing her move on and excel at a
four year university.”
Regina
Zink
Regina earned 2nd team All-Conference honors this year with a solid
all-around season. She battled through injuries and played tough
all season long for the Cougars. Regina placed herself fifth on
Barton’s record for career points and goals, finishing up
with 30 points and 12 goals.
Coach
Jared Wilbanks comments on Zink
– “Regina is a skilled player who is also extremely
tough. She played the majority of the season with a lower leg injury
and still managed to score 8 goals and proved to pester opposing
defenses.”
As
a team, the Cougars were outstanding. All around, they broke team
and individual records in points, goals, shots, and assists for
career, season, and single game marks. The team finished with 51
goals on the season and 123 points, setting school records in those
categories. The 2005 Cougars also finished 2nd all-time in assists
with 21, falling shy of the record of 25 set in 2003.
