Piper
leaves Barton to take over Nicholls State program
The
Barton County Community College women's soccer team will be in search
of a new coach after Cindy Piper was named the new women’s
soccer coach at Nicholls State University in Louisiana. Nicholls
State is an NCAA Division I school in Thibodaux and is a member
of the Southland Conference. Piper leaves Barton after two seasons
including the most successful season in school history this past
season when Barton finished with a 10-8-4 mark.
After
taking Barton County from just 4 wins in her season to the school
record mark of 10 wins her 2nd season, Coach Piper will face a similar
challenge at Nicholls State, where the team finished with a 4-16
mark and a 1-11 record in the Southland Conference.
“The
job at Nicholls State University is a great opportunity for me.
Its a big step up, one that I feel I am ready for,” Coach
Piper said. “I will have a lot of work to do there rebuilding
the program. The program is much like how the program was here when
I got here. I like the challenge ahead of me. I felt like Nicholls
was a good fit for me. I really wish Barton and the women's soccer
team the best. They are a great group of kids.”
"Coach
Piper did an outstanding job of training the soccer student-athletes,
coaching them during matches and also recruiting to build the depth
in the program,” Barton County Athletic Director Neil Elliott
said. “Her hard work has resulted in bringing the numbers
in the program up to a very solid level. We really hate to lose
her from our coaching staff, but also realize that she has a tremendous
opportunity to be a Division I head coach at a very young age. It
is a great opportunity for her and we wish her the very best luck
in her future endeavors."
As Coach Piper moves on after 2 years of coaching at Barton County
– her 1st collegiate coaching experience as a head coach –
she leaves behind a memorable time at Barton County in the early
stages of her coaching career.
“My
time at Barton has been a rewarding one, with lots of learning experiences,”
Coach Piper said. “I am grateful for the time I spent here
and for people I worked with. There are people on this campus that
taught me a lot about coaching as well as life in general. Whether
it was in the athletic department, admissions, enrollment services,
I have met some great people.”
The
school will now look toward finding a replacement for Coach Piper
with a program that has now moved from the inaugural stages to a
contender in the Jayhawk Conference.
"We
would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to Coach Piper
for the outstanding job that she has done helping build our women's
soccer program,” Elliott said. “Under her guidance the
program went from one the was in an infancy stage to one that is
now very competitive and on a very solid foundation."
