Cougars go 4-1 in non conference contests
The Barton Community College volleyball stepped out of Jayhawk West play this past weekend, winning 3 of 4 games at the Central College Tournament in Columbus, Nebraska then made it a 4-1 stint outside the West with an easy home win over the Friends JV Monday night. The Cougars are now 17-8 overall this season with a handful of games still remaining including 4 important West games. Barton will play the 1st of those 4 West games Thursday at the Barton Gym when the Cougars host Dodge City at 6:30 pm.
Highlights
Barton played a couple of 4-set matches on Friday in Columbus, beating North Platte (Neb) before losing to host Central College. The Cougars beat North Platte, 22-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-17. Three Cougars reached double digits kills in the win led by Raney Okeson and Taylor Brown with 13 each. Xuemei Zhang added 10 kills to go with a team-high 3 service aces. She also led Barton with 5 blocks along with Laura Macek. Barton dropped the 4-set match to end Friday, falling to the host school 18-25, 30-28, 24-26, 17-25. The Cougars were led by 12 Okeson kills but the freshman committed 7 errors as well. The Cougars as a whole combined for 17 errors in the loss, hitting just .229. Macek had 7 blocks and Zhang added 6.
Saturday saw the Cougars roll to a pair of 3-set wins on the day, starting with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 win over Iowa Lakes. Macek led Barton with 9 kills in just 14 attempts with 1 error. Zhang added 8 kills with no errors and Brown added kills with just 1 error. Ana Paula Pego led Barton with 14 digs and Mengya Wang had 29 assists. The Cougars finished the tournament with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-16 win over West foe Colby in a non conference match. Macek continued her big day with 11 kills in 13 attempts with 1 error. The sophomore from Ellsworth also led Barton with 5 blocks.
The Cougars returned home to face the Friends JV Monday night and had little trouble as Barton readied to return to conference action. Barton won 25-11, 25-11, 25-15 over the Falcons. Brown paced 3 Cougars in double figure kills with 15, followed by Zhang with 12 and Okeson with 11. Wang led with 31 assists while Pego had 21 digs.
With four conference tilts left, the Cougars will still have a big say on the final standings. Barton would need help to win the Jayhawk but control their own destiny for a at least 3rd in the West and could easily finish 2nd if they were to win out. The 1st of those 4 contests will be Thursday when Dodge comes to the Barton Gym for a 6:30 pm start.
