Barton splits Jayhawk West matches with Garden, Pratt
The Barton Community College volleyball team split a pair of Jayhawk West matches with a win over Garden City and a loss to Pratt. Both matches were played at the Barton Gym. The Cougars are now 2-6 in the West and 10-22 overall. Barton beat Garden Saturday before losing to Pratt Wednesday. The Cougars will be at Dodge City Wednesday for another Jayhawk West tilt.
Highlights
Barton had to hold off Garden in opening game of the match then rolled to a pair of easy wins, taking the West battle 25-22, 25-12, 25-14. The Cougars were paced by Amber Hockman hitting the ball with 10 kills. Mengya Wang led Barton with 25 assists and added 10 digs and 4 blocks. Sammy Grollmes led the Cougars with 20 digs. Laura Macek had 8 blocks for Barton and also had 7 kills on just 16 attempts for a hitting percentage of .438. Ana Paulo Pego had 6 service aces and added 12 digs as well.
The Cougars weren’t as fortunate against Pratt, losing in just 3 games, 25-17, 26-24, 25-14. Pratt is currently 3rd in the West. Hockman again led Barton with 8 kills and added 13 digs as well to pace Barton. Lindsey Shinstock added 7 kills and 9 digs. Wang again led Barton with 25 assists and also led Barton with 7 blocks. Macek added 6 blocks.
The Cougars also dropped five games this past weekend at Liberal, losing in four of those games to teams ranked in the NJCAA Top 15. The other loss was to host Seward County, who had been ranked at times this year.
