Barton beats Dodge in West play; splits matches at Lamar Triangular
The Barton Community College volleyball team won 2 of its last 3 matches including a Jayhawk West win at Dodge City this past week. The Cougars won Thursday at Dodge in 3, 25-22, 25-22, 25-14 then split matches Saturday in Lamar, Colo. Barton lost to ranked Frank Phillips (Texas) and beat host Lamar. The Cougars are currently 3-6 in the West and still in the hunt to host a 1st Round Region VI playoff match. Barton is 12-23 overall.
Highlights
The Cougars gained ground on that 4th spot in the West and hosting a 1st round game with a win over the team currently in 4th at Dodge. Dodge is now 4-6 in the West just 1/2 game up on the Cougars. Laura Macek led Barton in kills in the win with 8 followed by Mengya Wang with 7. Barton played without its leading hitter as Amber Hockman didn’t play due to an injury. Wang also had 12 assists to lead Barton with Ana Paulo Pego adding 9. Macek, among the national leaders in blocks, collected 14 more at Dodge to lead the way. Sammy Grollmes had 18 digs with Wang and Lindsey Schinstock adding 11 and 10.
The Cougars lost to No. 9 Frank Phillips in the first game of the triangular at Lamar, 25-16, 25-12, 25-16. Schinstock had 8 kills and Wang 19 assists to lead the Cougars. Schinstock also had 5 blocks and Pego 12 digs to pace the Cougars in the loss.
Barton rebounded with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 win over the host Lopers of Lamar. Schinstock had 11 kills and Kassie Rohr 9 to lead the Cougars. Wang tallied 23 assists while Macek collected 11 blocks for the Cougars. Schinstock and Grollmes each had 12 digs and Pego added 10. Grollmes and Pego also had 2 aces each.
