Cougars win Region VI opener; drop 2 at tournament
The Barton Community College volleyball team won its Region VI opener this past week at Dodge City before moving on to the double elimination tournament at Hutchinson this past weekend. Barton went on the road as the No. 5 seed in the tournament and knocked off No. 4 Dodge City in four games to move on the 4-team tournament where they lost to Hutchinson and Pratt. Hutchinson, the top seed, eventually won the tournament. The Cougars finish their season with a 14-27 record.

Highlights
The Cougars advanced with a win at Dodge Wednesday to start the tournament, winning at the Civic Center, 26-24, 25-20, 12-25, 27-25. Barton struggled at times hitting the ball in the win, hitting at just a .098 percentage but managed to spread around 36 kills in the match for the win. Kassie Rohr led Barton with 8 kills followed by Lindsay Schinstock, Cenquis Rockett, and Laura Macek with 7 each. Macek was big at the net all night, collecting10 solo blocks and 13 all together with just 2 blocking errors. Mengya Wang led Barton with 28 assists while Sammy Grollmes led a host of Barton player with double digit digs. Grollmes had 18 digs to pace 6 Cougars in double figures. Schinstock added 16 and Ana Paula Pego and Kayla Becker 13 each. Want and Macek each added 11.

Barton wasn’t able to win a game against the top seed Hutchinson to open the double elimination tournament, losing in straight games, 25-17, 25-17, 25-12. Amber Hockman and Rockett each had 4 kills to pace Barton in the loss. Macek had 5 blocks and Hockman 12 digs. The Cougars didn’t fare much better in the elimination game with Pratt, falling 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 to the Beavers, who eventually lost to Hutchinson in the finals. Wang, Hockman and Rockett each had 5 kills in the loss. Grollmes led Barton with 18 digs and Pego added 12 assists and 11 digs.
