Cougars battle through tough competition at Hutchinson Invite
The Barton Community College volleyball team faced 3 ranked teams this past weekend at the Bank of American Invite in Hutchinson at the Sports Arena. Barton lost those 3 matches as well as a 5-game battle with Seminole State (Okla) to end the weekend with an 0-4 record. Barton is now 9-15 overall. Barton will step back into Jayhawk West play this week when Hutchinson visits the Barton Gym Wednesday. Hutchinson is ranked No. 17 in the NJCAA with a 13-11 record.

Highlights
Barton started the weekend off with Seminole State, taking a 1-0 lead with a 25-23 win in the opening game. Seminole came back to win the next 2 games but Barton extended the match with a 25-22 in the 4th game. Seminole came out with a 15-13 win in the final game to capture the match. The Cougars were led in hitting by Amber Hockman with 19 kills but Barton was able to hit just .090 in the contest with 43 kills and 32 errors on 122 attempts. Mengya Wang led Barton with 49 assists and tied for the team lead at 19 digs with Hockman. Lindsey Schinstock added 18 digs and 2 service aces.

The Cougars gave No. 8 San Jacinto (Texas) a battle for a while, losing 25-23 in the 2nd game but fell quickly in the final game 25-9. San Jacinto won the 1st game 25-19. Barton collected just 19 kills in the loss, led by Hockman and Schinstock with 5 each as the Cougars continued with hitting errors.

Barton was able to take a game from No. 10 Jefferson (Mo) but couldn’t play at the Vikings caliber for 4 games. Jefferson won the match 25-15, 23-25, 25-8, 25-16. Hockman again led the Cougars with 14 kills and Wang led Barton with 21 assists. Laura Macek had 10 blocks for the Cougars. In the final contest of the Invite, Barton lost to No. 11 Missouri State West Plains in 3 games, 25-23, 25-18, 25-9. Schinstock had 6 kills to lead Barton while Wang had 25 assists and 10 digs.

Barton will host Hutchinson this week in West action as Barton tries to hand Hutch its 1st West loss of the season. Barton is 1-4 in the West. The Blue Dragons are unbeaten in West action with a 5-0 record. Of Hutch’s 11 losses this season, 10 have been to ranked teams.
