Barton wins two on 2nd day of NJCAA Tournament; plays for 9th Saturday
The Barton County Community College volleyball team earned its 1st win of the 2007 NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa in the 1st round of the loser’s bracket. The Cougars rolled to the easy win in 3 games over Spartansburg Methodist (SC), 30-18, 30-21, 30-15 at the Mid American Center. The Cougars then advanced to the 9th place contest later in the day with a thrilling 30-28, 32-30, 29-31, 34-32 win over Missouri West Plains in the loser’s bracket semifinals. Barton will play the College of Southern Idaho Saturday for 9th place.

Highlights
The Cougars won the 1st game against Spartansburg Methodist in easy style. The Cougars took turned a close game into a 15-10 lead midway through the game then gradually pulled away for the 30-18 win. The Cougars pulled away about the same point of the 2nd game as well, trailing 12-11 before going on an 8-0 run to take a 19-12 lead on the Pioneers. Spartansburg Methodist got as close as 21-17 before Barton finished strong for a 30-21 win.

The Cougars dominated game 3 from the outset, leading 3-0, 7-1, and 10-2. The Pioneers did cut the lead to 10-7 at one point, but Barton quickly pushed the lead back out and finished strong for a 30-15 win. Staci Thompson led Barton with 9 kills and collected 6 digs. Amber Hockman and Rebecca Lima each ended with 8 kills. Alik Cardoso de Sa had 23 assists to pace the Cougars while Kassie Rohr added 22. Cristin Haines and Juliana Moraes each had 14 digs in the win.

Barton battled to a 4-game marathon win over West Plains. Each game was separated by just 2 points. The contest was close throughout with Barton pulling out the win. Lima led Barton with 16 kills and added 32 digs to the effort. Kara Robeson had 15 kills with Lisa Ohanaja and Gracie D’Amore adding 11 kills each. Cardoso de Sa had 61 assists and 12 digs while Haines led Barton with 37 digs.
