Summer Volleyball Camps Set for 2008
Cardoso de Sa named Honorable Mention All American
Coming off a return trip the NJCAA National Tournament for the 1st time in 5 years, Barton County Community College volleyball sophomore Alik Cardoso de Sa stepped into the national spotlight in December after adding the title of Honorable Mention All-American to her long list of volleyball achievements.The 5-11 setter was named to the 30-person list after completing an illustrious Barton career with a ninth-place finish at the NJCAA national tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Cougars grab 9th place at NJCAA Tournament in dramatic fashion
The Barton County Community College volleyball team finished the 2007 season with 3 straight wins, including a back-to-wall comeback win over the College of Southern Idaho in the 9th place game Saturday morning at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Cougars lost the 1st 2 games to CSI then won the next 3 for the 24-30, 16-30, 30-22, 33-31, 15-10 win. The Cougars were one point from elimination on two occasions in the 4th game but came back to win that contest before closing out the Golden Eagles in the deciding match. Barton reached the 40-win mark with the win, ending the year at 40-8. It was the 1st 40-win season since 2000 for the Cougars.
Barton wins two on 2nd day of NJCAA Tournament; plays for 9th Saturday
The Barton County Community College volleyball team earned its 1st win of the 2007 NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa in the 1st round of the loser’s bracket. The Cougars rolled to the easy win in 3 games over Spartansburg Methodist (SC), 30-18, 30-21, 30-15 at the Mid American Center. The Cougars then advanced to the 9th place contest later in the day with a thrilling 30-28, 32-30, 29-31, 34-32 win over Missouri West Plains in the loser’s bracket semifinals. Barton will play the College of Southern Idaho Saturday for 9th place.
Barton rally comes up short ; Cougars drop 5-game match to open NJCAA play
The Barton County Community College volleyball team came up short in its bid for a win in the opening round of the 2007 NJCAA Tournament, falling short in 5 exciting games. The Cougars lost to San Jacinto (Texas) in the opening round, 30-25, 23-30, 23-30, 30-22, 13-15 at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The loss drops 7th seeded Barton into the loser’s bracket, where the best the Cougars can finish is 9th place. Barton will begin that trek through the loser’s bracket Friday morning at 10 am when the take on Spartansburg Methodist (SC). The loss to San Jacinto was the 2nd this year for Barton, now 37-8. San Jacinto (29-11) will play No. 2 seed Miami-Dade (31-0).

Barton draws San Jacinto in opening round of NJCAA Tournament
The Barton County Community College volleyball team will take on San Jacinto (Texas) to start play at the 2007 NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament. The Cougars, ranked No. 7 in the final NJCAA poll, will be the No. 7 seed at the event. San Jacinto is the No. 10 seed. The two teams will battle Thursday, Nov. 15 at Noon in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the Mid America Center. If Barton wins that contest, the Cougars will more than likely take on traditional power and No. 2 seed Miami-Dade that night at 6:30. Miami-Dade plays Spartanburg Methodist (SC) in opening round play.
Barton wins Region VI title; headed to NJCAA National Tournament
The Barton County Community College volleyball team captured the Region VI Championship Monday night with a 4-game win over Hutchinson at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson. The two teams split the 1st 2 games then Barton rolled in the final 2 games to earn its 1st Region VI title in 4 years. Barton defeated the Blue Dragons, 30-28, 24-30, 30-18, 30-22 to earn the right to move on to the NJCAA Championships Nov. 15-17 in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the Mid America Center. Hutchinson would have had to beat the Cougars twice Monday to earn a trip to the NJCAA Tournament. The last time Barton won the Region VI title and moved on to the NJCAA Tournament was 2003 when the Cougars were crowned NJCAA National Champions. Barton (37-7) will find out who they play in Council Bluffs in the upcoming days.
Cardoso de Sa lone Cougar on All Region VI 1st team
The Barton County Community College volleyball team wrapped up an unbeaten run through Region VI this year with the Region VI title Monday night in Hutchinson, earning a trip to the NJCAA Tournament. Following that win the All Region VI Volleyball team was announced with Barton’s Alik Cardoso de Sa the lone Cougar selected to the 1st team. Cardoso de Sa was the 3rd leading vote-getter in the selections as picked by the six coaches in Region VI, Division I. The Cougars placed 4 members on the 2nd team in Kara Robeson, Lisa Ohanaja, Rebecca Lima, and Cristin Haines.
Barton moves into Region VI title game with wins over Garden, Hutch
The Barton County Community College volleyball team advanced to the Region VI Championship game Sunday with a pair of wins during day 1 of the double elimination bracket at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson. The Cougars knocked off Garden City early in the afternoon before defeating Hutch late in the evening in 4 games. The wins left Barton the only unbeaten team in the tournament and now must be beaten in back-to-back games today to keep the Cougars from their 1st Region VI title 4 years. Barton will play at 5 pm against the winner of the Hutch-Seward County game. If the Cougars were to lose that game the same two teams will play at 7 pm.
Cardoso de Sa, Haines earn 1st team All-West; Parker Coach of the Year
The Barton County Community College volleyball team went through the Jayhawk West unbeaten this year and were rewarded with five players gaining recognition on the All Jayhawk West team as well as Coach Ryan Parker being tabbed Coach of the Year. Barton had two players selected to the 1st in sophomores Alik Cardoso de Sa and Cristin Haines. Three more Cougars were selected to the 2nd team in sophomores Kara Robeson and Lisa Ohanaja in addition to freshman Rebecca Lima.
Cougars rally in 5th game to claim Jayhawk West title
The Barton County Community College volleyball team completed an unbeaten Jayhawk West conference season and captured its first outright Jayhawk West title since 2002 with a win over Seward County Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. For the 2nd time this season, Barton embarked in a 5-game thriller against top level West competition before pulling out the home win. Barton won the match 28-30, 30-17, 30-15, 16-30, 16-14. The Cougars wrap up an 8-0 West season and are now 34-7 overall this year, ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA. Seward finished 3rd in the West at 6-2 while Hutch was 2nd at 7-1. Barton will get a bye in the opening round of the Region VI playoffs. The Cougars will play in the double elimination portion of the Region VI Championships in Hutchinson Nov. 4-5.
Barton beats Neosho; Seward on Wednesday for West finale
The Barton County Community College volleyball team stepped outside Jayhawk West play Friday night, earning a 30-16, 30-13, 30-24 win over Jayhawk East member Neosho County at the Barton Gym. The Cougars moved to 33-7 on the season. Barton is currently ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA. Neosho falls to 15-14 with the loss. The Cougars will now turn their focus to their showdown Wednesday night against Seward with the outright conference title on the line. Barton is 7-0 in the West while Seward and Hutch are 6-1. A Barton win would give the Cougars sole possession of the West title while a loss could drop Barton into a 3-way tie for the title. The match is set to serve at 6:30 pm at the Barton Gym.
Barton secures at least share of Jayhawk West title
The Barton County Community College volleyball team clinched at least a share of the Jayhawk West title with a 30-17, 30-7, 30-13 win over Dodge City Thursday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars moved to 7-0 in the West, assuring themselves no worse that a tie for 1st in the West. Hutch and Seward are both 6-1 in the West with a Barton-Seward match set for Wednesday night at Barton. If Barton wins that, it will be the outright champion. A Barton loss and a Hutch win over Cloud Wednesday would create a 3-way tie for the championship. Barton, ranked No. 7 and 32-7 overall this year, gets at least a portion of the conference title for the 1st time since 2003 when the Cougars were later crowned NJCAA Champions.
Cougars roll at Pratt; can clinch at least share of West title against Dodge
The Barton County Community College volleyball team improved to 6-0 in Jayhawk West play with a win at Pratt Wednesday night. The 30-20, 30-19, 30-24 win put the Cougars just 1 win away from claiming at least a share of the Jayhawk West title. Barton can claim that share tonight when the Cougars host Dodge City in a makeup game scheduled for earlier this month. A win would move Barton to 7-0 in the conference with 1 West game to play. Hutchinson and Seward each have 1 loss and Barton still has Seward to play in its West finale Oct. 24. Barton moved up two spots in the most recent NJCAA poll to No. 7.
Barton goes 2-2 at Seward Invite; loses to No. 1 and 7 in NJCAA poll
The Barton County Community College volleyball team played some of its best competition of the season this past weekend at the Seward Invitational in Liberal. Barton played 3 ranked teams and a 4th that is receiving votes, going 2-2 at the event. Barton lost to the No. 1 and 7 teams in the NJCAA poll. The Cougars, ranked No. 9, are now 30-7 on the season. Barton is back in Jayhawk West play this week with games at Pratt and at home with Dodge City. The Cougars are currently the only unbeaten at 5-0 in the West with 3 matches left.
Cougars outlast Hutchinson rally to become only unbeaten team in West
The Barton County Community College volleyball team put itself in the driver’s seat for the Jayhawk West title, taking down the 3-time defending champion Hutchinson Wednesday night at an electric Barton Gym. The Cougars won the won the contest 32-30, 30-25, 18-30, 26-30, 15-13 to become the only unbeaten team in the West, sending Hutch to its 1st loss. It was also the Blue Dragons 1st loss in West play in 30 matches. The Cougars, ranked No. 9, are now 5-0 in West play with 3 conference tilts remaining. Hutchinson, ranked No. 14, falls to 5-1 in the West. The Cougars will take a 28-5 record into the weekend’s tournament at Seward County where Barton will face the No. 1 and 7 team in the country as well as Hutchinson again in pool play.
sweeps foes in Jefferson Invitational
The Barton County Community College volleyball team swept through four opponents at the Jefferson Invitational in Hillsboro, Mo this past weekend. Barton was victorious in 3 games each match to run its winning streak to 5 matches. The Cougars won a pair on Friday, including a win over host Jefferson College and its toughest match of the weekend over Illinois Central. Barton won two games easily Saturday to conclude the Invitational with a perfect 4-0 mark. Barton, ranked No. 9 in the latest NJCAA poll, is now 27-5. Barton will set its sight on the lead in the Jayhawk West when Hutchinson comes to Great Bend for a battle of the two lone unbeatens left in the conference. The match will start at 6:30 Wednesday. The match will include 5 pair of Garth Brooks Tickets to be given away by Eagle Radio.
Cougars go to 4-0 in West with win at Garden City
The Barton County Community College volleyball team kept its unbeaten Jayhawk West record in tact, winning a 4-game match at Garden City Wednesday night, 30-28, 30-25, 25-30, 30-27. The Cougars moved to 4-0 the West with the win and 23-5 overall. Barton is now 1 of 2 unbeatens left in the West after Hutchinson defeated previously unbeaten Seward Wednesday as well. Hutch is 5-0 and will be at the Barton Gym Wednesday in a battle for sole possession of 1st place. This weekend Barton heads to Hillsboro, Mo. for the Jefferson College Invitational. Barton fell one spot to No. 9 in the latest NJCAA poll. Seward was 12th and Hutch 16th.
Barton goes 3-1 at Tyson Invitational; beats 2 ranked teams
The Barton County Community College volleyball team played 3 ranked teams over the weekend at the Tyson Invitational at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson, defeating 2 of those while going 3-1 over the weekend. The Cougars ran their winning streak to 13 matches before losing its final match of the tournament. Barton is now 22-5 on the season and will return to Jayhawk West play Wednesday when it travels to Garden City.
Cougars win easily at Lamar; move up to No. 8 in latest NJCAA poll
The Barton County Community College volleyball team made it 10 straight wins Tuesday night in Lamar, Colo, rolling to a 30-22, 30-16, 30-18 win over the Runnin’ Lopes. Earlier in the day Tuesday the new NJCAA poll came out with moving up 2 spots to No. 8 in the country. Barton is now 19-4 overall this season and the highest ranked team from the conference and region. The Cougars game with Dodge City for Wednesday postponed with no make up date set as of yet.
Barton goes 4-0 in Highland Hotel Invite; moves to 18-4 on season
The Barton County Community College volleyball team rolled through its own invitational this past weekend, winning all 4 matches at the Highland Hotel Invite. After winning easily twice on Friday, the Cougars battled a pair of ranked teams – 1 in NJCAA DI and 1 in DII – winning twice Saturday to end the weekend at 4-0 in the round robin affair. Barton opened Saturday with a win over No. 14 Hutchinson, and then beat D-II No. 2 Cowley to end the day. The Cougars, ranked No. 10 in the latest NJCAA poll, improved to 18-4 overall with the wins.
Barton wins in straight games over Lamar; Highland Hotel Invite next
The Barton County Community College volleyball team warmed up for this weekend’s Highland Hotel Invitational with a 30-11, 30-26, 30-17 win over Lamar (Colo) Thursday night at the Barton Gym. The win moved the No. 10 ranked Cougars to 14-4 on the season. Next on the docket is the Cougars annual Highland Hotel Invitational which will feature ranked teams Barton and Hutch (15th) as well as D-II No. 2 Cowley. The event gets underway Friday and runs through Saturday.
Cougars run to 3-0 in West with win at Colby; move to No. 10 in NJCAA
The Barton County Community College volleyball team battled through 3 tough games Monday at Colby but won the match in straight games to stay unbeaten in Jayhawk West play. The Cougars won 30-26, 31-29, 30-24 over the Trojans to improve to 3-0 in West play and 13-4 overall. Barton also moved up 3 spots this week in the NJCAA poll to No. 10. The Cougars will host Lamar (Colo) Thursday before hosting the Highland Hotel Invitational this weekend. The Invitational will feature No. 15 Hutchinson and D-II No. 2 Cowley. Also in the event are Labette and Williams Woods (Mo) JV.
Barton moves to 2-0 in West with over Cloud; ranked No. 13 in NJCAA poll
The Barton County Community College volleyball team entered the NJCAA Top 20 Wednesday then came out and made it 2-0 in the Jayhawk West with a 3-game win over Cloud County at the Barton Gym. The Cougars won the West match 30-16, 30-18, 30-26 to improve to 2-0 in the West and 12-4 overall this season. Cloud fell to 0-3 and 2-13. Barton entered the poll Wednesday ranked No. 13. The Cougars will be off until Monday when they start a week that will see them play 6 matches over 4 days. Barton will start it at Colby Monday then have a home match Thursday before hosting the Highland Hotel Invitational this weekend.
Cougars win Jayhawk West opener at Butler
The Barton County Community College volleyball team won its Jayhawk West opener Wednesday night in El Dorado, defeating Butler in 3 games. The Cougars won the contest 30-26, 30-20, 30-21 to start the West season 1-0 and improve to 11-4 overall this season. Barton will be at home for West play Wednesday when they host Cloud County at 6:30 pm in the Barton gym.
Barton takes 3rd in Frank Phillips Labor Day Classic
The Barton County Community College volleyball team took 3rd place over the weekend at the Frank Phillips Labor Day Classic in Borger, Texas. The Cougars finished 2nd in their pool Friday then lost in the semifinals of bracket play Saturday to the eventual champion – host Frank Phillips. Barton avenged its only pool play loss with a win in the 3rd place game over New Mexico Military. Barton ended the Classic with a 4-2 record, running its season mark to 10-4. The Cougars will start Jayhawk West play Wednesday when they travel to El Dorado to take on Butler.
Barton holds off Friends JV for win in home opener
The Barton County Community College volleyball won its home opener Wednesday night, holding off the Friends JV in 4 games, winning 30-15, 30-26, 27-30, 30-16 to improve to 6-2 on the season. The Cougars will hit the road again this weekend, traveling to Borger, Texas for the Frank Phillips Labor Day Classic. The Cougars will open Jayhawk West Conference play on the road Wednesday, traveling to El Dorado to take on Butler.
Cougars go 5-2 in Molten Classic to start 07 campaign
The Barton County Community College volleyball team started its 2007 season off by winning 5 of 7 games at the Molten Classic on the campus of Iowa Western Community College this past weekend. The Cougars only two losses were to Iowa Western, the defending NJCAA Division I Champs and to Kishwaukee (Ill), the defending NJCAA Division II Champs. In Barton’s other 5 matches, the Cougars rolled to wins in 2 games. Barton defeated Cloud County, Labette, Marshalltown (Iowa), Ellsworth (Iowa), and Indian Hills (Iowa). The Cougars will be at home Wednesday to take on the Friends JV at 7 pm in their home opener.
