Cougars knock off No. 2 Miami-Dade; hand defending champs 1st loss
The Barton County Community College volleyball team officially served notice to the rest of the nation the Cougars are back on the national scene. That notice came with a hammer Thursday night in Hillsboro, Mo. when the Cougars knocked off the defending NJCAA champions and No. 2 ranked Miami-Dade College. Barton handed the Sharks their 1st loss of the season, 30-23, 23-30, 30-27 and 30-26. The two teams were at Jefferson College in Hillsboro for the Jefferson Invitational that gets under way today and runs through Saturday. The two played the non conference tilt prior to the tournament, not as part of the Invitational. Barton, ranked No. 13, is now 23-4 this season while Miami-Dade falls to 17-1. Barton will also take on No. 8 Southwest Missouri State-West Plains this weekend among the 4 teams it plays in the Jefferson Invite.

Highlights
The Cougars gained momentum by winning the opening game of the match against the Sharks by a 30-23 margin. It was the 3rd time this season Miami-Dade lost an opening game only to come storming back and win the next 3 games. It looked like that may happen again as the Sharks captured the 2nd game by that same 30-23 score.

But this time Miami-Dade would not run 3 straight games together. In fact, the Sharks would not win another game from Barton. Barton held off the Sharks in the 3rd game, winning by a 30-27 score, putting Miami-Dade down 2-1 for the 1st time this year. Barton closed the deal in the final game by a 30-26 count, picking up the win over the highest ranked foe the Cougars have beaten have 2 years.

Several Cougars contributed to the cause mightily, led by sophomore standout Sunshine Uli. Suli had another double-double, leading Barton with 18 kills and adding 13 digs. She also had 6 blocks. Tayna Sale had a great outing for Barton with her own double-double at 13 kills and 14 digs. Sale also had 2 service aces. Juliana Moraes finished with 14 kills and 8 blocks for Barton. Ashlee Maple was again solid on defense with 14 digs and added a pair of aces. Kali Angerman recorded 54 assists and 12 digs while Sarah Shinstock had a great game at the net on defense with 12 blocks.

Coach Kurt Kohler comments
We just played a great match. As a team we just came together and looked really, really good. Miami-Dade is an awesome team and they had a hard time stopping us. We just had things clicking.
