Cougars impressive in sweeping through ranked foes in Missouri
If responding to a loss is any indication of how good a team is then the Barton County Community College volleyball team must be pretty good. The No. 3 ranked Cougars rebounded from their only loss of the season, a Jayhawk West home setback to No. 17 Seward County, by knocking off the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 7 teams in the country as they swept through the Jefferson College Invitational in Hillsboro, Missouri with a perfect 6-0 mark. The Cougars are now 21-1 on the season.

Highlights
Barton was tested immediately of out the gate Friday with battles against No. 4 Southwest Missouri State-West Plains, and No. 1 Miami-Dade. The Cougars won in a war of attrition in the opening game with SMS-West Plains, capturing a 32-30 win over the Grizzlies. Barton had a bit of an easier time in the 2nd game, winning 30-25 to close out the match. Paula Caten and Raquel Ferriera led the Cougar with 11 kills each.

Then came Miami-Dade, who was not only the No. 1 ranked team in the country but also carried with it a 76-match winning streak into the contest. The Cougars handed the Sharks a 30-28 setback in the first game before Miami-Dade won with an identical 30-28 score in the second contest. In the 3rd and deciding tilt, Barton won fairly easily by a 15-8 margin, ending the Sharks long winning streak. Caten had 18 kills in the win while Claudia Houle added 11.

Barton closed out the day Friday with a 30-15, 30-15 win over Iowa Western. Ferriera had 8 kills to pace Barton in the win. Livia Salzano had 3 serves aces as well as 29 assists. The Cougars opened played Saturday against Illinois Central, winning easily by a 30-16, 30-17 tally. Ferriera had 7 kills and Houle 6 for the Cougars.

Barton’s 2nd tilt Saturday was against the host school, No. 7 ranked Jefferson College. The Cougars had to go extra time in the first game but again found a way to win in a 34-32 victory over the Vikings. The Cougars closed out the match with a 30-25 win in the 2nd contest. Ferriera had 9 kills to pace Barton while Tokunbo Faleti added 7 kills. Salzano had 41 assists in the win.

Coach John Hunter Comments
" We competed very well this weekend against high level teams. Our kids showed great heart and made plays at critical times."

"While we are pleased with our performance against some of the country's top teams, our players left the tournament knowing that our best volleyball is still ahead of us. The real test will be Tuesday when we see what kind of intensity we bring to practice."
