Coach
Hunter headed overseas for professional job
In
the coaching profession, success often opens up opportunities.
That is what has happened for Barton County Community College
volleyball coach John Hunter. The Cougar head coach –
with the NJCAA National Title under his belt – is on
his way to Japan to become an assistant volleyball coach in
one of the premier professional volleyball leagues in the
World. Hunter tenured his resignation today to the Barton
County Board of Trustees at its monthly meeting. The search
for a successor will begin immediately.
Ferreira,
Caten, Salzano earn All-American honors; Hunter tabbed Coach-of-the-Year
For
the 4th time in school history the Barton County Community
College volleyball team placed two players on the NJCAA All-American
1st team. Raquel Ferreira and Paula Caten were selected as
1st team All-Americans, which was released Wednesday by the
NJCAA. In addition to Ferreira and Caten, Livia Salzano was
picked 2nd team, giving the Cougars 3 players honored on the
All-American team for the 1st time in school history.
Cougars
capture NJCAA National Volleyball Championship
After
several years of national success, the Barton County Community
College volleyball team reached the pinnacle Wednesday night
when the Cougars captured the 2003 NJCAA National Volleyball
Championship in West Plains, Mo. The Cougars and Coach John
Hunter earned that title by knocking off the host school Southwest
Missouri State-West Plains, 30-21, 30-20, 30-27. The win was
Barton County’s 45th National Title in schools history,
but the 1st in volleyball. The other 44 have come in track
and cross country. Barton, the No. 2 seed in the tournament,
ended its season with a 34-1 record.
Barton
headed to NJCAA title game for 2nd time in school history
The Barton County Community College volleyball team will be making just its 2nd
appearance in the NJCAA Volleyball National Tournament after scoring a 30-27,
30-26, 31-29 win over Southern Idaho in the semifinals of the National Tournament
in West Plains, Mo. The Cougars, the No. 2 seed will take on the host school
Southwest Missouri State-West Plains in the Championships Wednesday night at
6 p.m. The game can be heard live on 104.3 FM in Great Bend. West Plains, the
No. 5 seed, beat the No. 1 seed Miami-Dade in semifinal action, winning 15-8
in the deciding game of the match.
Cougars
place 3 on All Jayhawk West 1st team; 7 honored
With the Barton County Community College volleyball team heading to the NJCAA
Tournament in pursuit of its first NJCAA National Championships, the team was
rewarded with several members named to the All Jayhawk West team and All Region
VI, District D team. Currently the Cougars are 30-1 as they take their No. 2
NJCAA ranking to the NJCAA tournament this week in West Plains, Mo.
Barton
headed to NJCAA Tourney for the 16th straight season
The Barton County Community College volleyball
team secured a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament
with 3 wins over the weekend at the District D
Championships
in Hutchinson. Barton opened the 4-team double-elimination bracket by breezing
by Colby, 30-9, 30-6, and 30-13 on Saturday. Sunday the Cougars took care of
Hutchinson twice, winning 30-17, 30-23, 30-23 in the winner’s bracket
final then defeated the Blue Dragons 30-20, 30-12, 30-17 in the Championship.
The Cougars,
ranked No. 2 in the country, are now 30-1.
Cougars
move in District D Final Four with win over Highland
The
Barton County Community College volleyball team opened post
season play by cruising to a 30-9, 30-8, 30-14 win over Highland
Community College Monday night at the Barton County Gym. The
improved the No. 2 ranked Cougars to 27-1. Barton County will
take on Colby Saturday at 12:30 in District D play in Hutchinson.
Barton
closes out regular season with win over Pratt
The Barton County Community College volleyball team rolled to an easy win to
wrap up the regular season and with it a share of the Jayhawk West title. It
is the 3rd straight year the Cougars have won or tied for the West title. Barton
achieved that by defeating Pratt on the road 30-9, 30-9, 30-18. Barton, ranked
No. 2 in the country, is now 26-1 overall and 7-1 in the West. The Cougars will
host Highland Monday at 5:30 pm in Region VI, District D 1st round action. That
contest will be followed by the Barton County women’s basketball season
opener against the Newman JV at 7 pm. Admission to both events is free.
Cougars
roll by No. 13 ranked Hutchinson in West play
The
Barton County Community College volleyball team knocked off
their 6th ranked team in the past 11 matches, defeating Hutchinson
30-26, 30-14, 30-21 at the Barton County Gym Wednesday night
in Jayhawk Conference. The win gave Barton an 11-match winning
steak and improved the No. 2 team in the country to 25-1 overall
and 6-1 in the West. The 6-1 mark has the Cougars tied atop
the standings with No. 12 Seward County. Hutchinson fell to
36-5 overall and 6-2 in the West.
Barton
rolls by two more ranked foes in 3-0 weekend in Liberal
The Barton County Community College volleyball
team continued its successful run with ranked foes
by defeating two more ranked teams over the weekend
at the
Seward County Invitational in Liberal. The Cougars were 3-0 on the weekend.
The Cougars were to play four games at the event
but the schedule was revised due
to the funeral services of Seward County president Dr. James Grote on Friday.
Barton did not play Seward County. The No. 2 ranked Cougars are now 24-1 on
the season and are riding a 10-match winning streak
that includes wins over 5 ranked
teams – 4 in the Top 10.
Barton’s
Salzano named NJCAA volleyball Player-of-the-Week
Barton
County Community College freshman Livia Salzano has been the
volleyball Player-of-the-Week by the NJCAA for her efforts
in helping Barton County to a 6-0 record over the weekend
in Hillsboro, Mo. at the Jefferson College Invitational.
Barton
climbs to No. 2 in poll after big weekend; set to face 3 more
ranked teams
The Barton County Community College volleyball team reached its highest ranking
of the season today when the NJCAA released its most recent volleyball poll.
The Cougars, despite losing their only game of the season last week, climbed
from No. 3 to No. 2 thanks to a 6-0 weekend which included a win over No. 1 ranked
Miami-Dade. The win over Miami-Dade ended a 76-match winning streak for the Sharks.
Barton also beat No. 4 Southwest Missouri State-West Plains and No. 7 Jefferson
College over the weekend as well.
Cougars
impressive in sweeping through ranked foes in Missouri
If responding to a loss is any indication of how good a team is then the Barton
County Community College volleyball team must be pretty good. The No. 3 ranked
Cougars rebounded from their only loss of the season, a Jayhawk West home setback
to No. 17 Seward County, by knocking off the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 7 teams in
the country as they swept through the Jefferson College Invitational in Hillsboro,
Missouri with a perfect 6-0 mark. The Cougars are now 21-1 on the season.
Barton
volleyball loses for 1st time this season
The
Barton County Community College volleyball team fell to defeat
for the first time this season Monday night when Jayhawk West
foe Seward County came to Great Bend and pulled off the upset
of the No. 3 ranked Cougars. Seward County defeated the Cougars
by a 30-28, 30-27, 30-25 score to drop Barton to 15-1 overall
and 5-1 in the West. Seward, who entered the game with a No.
17 ranking, improves to 16-7 overall and 5-1 in the West as
well.
Cougars
earn West win over Colby; remain unbeaten
The
Barton County Community College volleyball team kept its perfect
season in tact with a Jayhawk West win over Colby Wednesday
night at the Barton County Gym. The Cougars won the contest
30-17, 30-18, 30-17 to move to 15-0 for the season and 5-0
in West play. The win keeps the Cougars tied atop the Jayhawk
West with Hutchinson at 5-0. Seward County fell from the ranks
of the unbeaten in the conference Wednesday night when they
fell to Dodge City in a thrilling 5-game match.

4 Cougars impressive in Hometown Brand Center Classic
The
Barton County Community College volleyball team remained unbeaten
this season, going 3-0 over the weekend at its own tournament,
winning the Hometown Brand Center Classic. The tournament
involved 3 ranked teams, including Barton. Barton, ranked
No. 4, knocked off Cowley County, No. 7 Jefferson College
and No. 12 Seward County to run its mark to 14-0 this season.
Jefferson College was 2nd with Seward 3rd and Cowley 4th.
Barton
wins at Butler to move to 4-0 in Jayhawk West; 11-0 overall
The Barton County Community College volleyball team remained unbeaten on the
season with a 30-8, 30-10, 30-21 win at Butler County Wednesday night. The win
moved Barton to 11-0 for the season and 4-0 in Jayhawk West play. The win was
the 3rd conference road win for Barton this season. Barton has just one West
road game remaining.

remain No. 4; host powerful Hometown Brand Center Classic
this weekend
The Barton County Community College volleyball team remained in the No. 4 spot
in the NJCAA’s latest poll this week. The Cougars are now 10-0 for the
season and 3-0 in Jayhawk West play. The
Cougars will put their unbeaten season on the line this
weekend when they host the Hometown Brand Center Classic
at Barton County. The Cougars will be 1 of 3 ranked teams
in the event, including a pair of Top 10 teams.
Cougars
move to 3-0 in West; earn 22nd straight Jayhawk win
The
Barton County Community College volleyball team kept its spot
at the top of the Jayhawk West with a conference win over
Garden City Wednesday night at the Barton County Gym. The
No. 4 ranked Cougars won the match by a 30-20, 30-13, 30-22
score to move to 3-0 in the West and 10-0 overall. Garden
City fell to 0-3 and 3-9. It was the 22nd straight Jayhawk
West win for the Cougars, dating back to 2000.
Cougars
ranked No. 4 in first NJCAA volleyball poll of season
The
Barton County Community College volleyball team landed in
the No. 4 spot in the NJCAA’s 1st poll of the season
that came out today. The Cougars are one of four teams from
the Jayhawk West that cracked the Top 20 poll. Barton, which
finished 5th last season, came in behind Miami-Dade County,
Southwest Missouri State-West Plains, and the College of Southern
Idaho. The Cougars are off to a 9-0 start on the season and
are currently 2-0 in the Jayhawk West. Barton County will
open at home Wednesday when they host Garden City in a 6:30
p.m. Jayhawk West battle at the Barton County Gym.

The Barton County Community College volleyball team won its 2nd Jayhawk West
road contest of the year Wednesday night, defeating Dodge City 30-20, 30-8, 28-30,
30-15. The moved the Cougars to 2-0 in the West and 9-0 overall this season. |
