Facey, Bailey, Mullings all earn gold on 4x100m relays
Three more former Barton Community College track stars earned a gold medal at the 12th annual IAAF World Championships on the next to last day of competition in the 4x100m relays. Simone Facey and Aleen Bailey both ran on the Jamaican women’s winning team – representing exactly half of the team. Steve Mullings ran the opening leg for the Jamaican men in the 4x100m as they also captured gold.

Those efforts Saturday in Berlin wrapped up a very successful 9 days of competition for several athletes that have run track at Barton. In addition to the relay golds won by ex Cougars, 2009 sophomore Ryan Brathwaite won a gold medal in the 110m hurdles for Barbados. Another member of last year’s Barton team – Alonso Edward – took silver in the men’s 200 for Panama. Also winning silver were former Cougars Veronica Campbell-Brown in the women’s 200m for Jamaica and Tyson Gay in the men’s 100m for the United States.

Women’s 4x100m relay – Simone Facey, Aleen Bailey
Facey started the winning 4x100m relay team for Jamaica and Bailey ran her traditional 3rd leg for the golden quartet. They were joined by Shelly-Ann Frazier and Kerron Stewart in both rounds. In the finals, the foursome ran a 42.06 to beat the Bahamas who took 2nd in 42.29. Germany rounded out the medals with a 42.87.

Jamaica’s normal rival for the event – the USA – did not make it out of the first round after Muna Lee fell following the hand off to the final leg.

Men’s 4x100m relay – Steve Mullilngs
Mullings ran the 1st leg of the Jamaican’s 4x100m relay team that won the gold medal in a new championship record of 37.31. He was joined by Michael Frater, Usain Bolt, and Asafa Powell for the winning time. Trinidad & Tobago finished 2nd with Great Britain coming in 3rd for the bronze.

The United States, usually Jamaica’s biggest rival in the event much like the women, did not run in the finals after being disqualified in the 1st round due to an exchange violation.

Championships complete
The 12th annual event wrapped up Sunday with athletes that went to school at Barton coming away with the three relay golds, the individual gold and three individual silver medals as noted above.

In addition, 3 more former Cougars placed 4th in Tabarie Henry (men’s 400m), Campbell (women’s 100m) and the Leevan Sands (men’s triple jump). Also earning spots in the finals of their event were Bailey (8th in women’s 100m), Facey (6th in women’s 200m), and Mullings (5th in men’s 200m).

Also competing but not making the finals were Walter Davis (men’s triple jump), Aaron Armstrong (men’s 200m), Laverne Jones-Ferrette (women’s 200m), and Clayton Latham (men’s long jump).
