Campbell misses medal, takes 4th in 100m at World Championships
Veronica Campbell failed to defend her 2007 gold medal at the IAAF World Championships Monday at Berlin. In fact, Campbell didn’t even collect a medal in the event, taking 4th in a season-best 10.95. Aleen Bailey, another former Barton Community College track star, took 8th in the race. Tuesday will bring the men’s 200m and several former and one current Barton Cougar taking part. Tabarie Henry – a Barton graduate this past season – will compete as well as ex Cougar Leevan Sands in the 400m and triple jump.
Women’s 100m – Veronica Campbell, Aleen Bailey
Campbell-Brown won the 100m at the 2007 World Championships but wasn’t able to go back-to-back. Campbell ran a 10.95 but that wasn’t good enough as 4 runners bested the 11.00-mark. Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser won the event in 10.73 as Jamaica finished 1-2-4- in the event. Kerron Stewart ran a 10.75 for 2nd while American Carmelita Jeter sandwiched the Jamaicans in 3rd at 10.90. Bailey ran an 11.16 for 8th in the finals.
Earlier in the day Jeter beat Campbell-Brown in their semifinal heat as Campbell ran an 11.00. Bailey was 4th in the same heat in 11.16 to secure the last spot in the finals.
Schedule
Tuesday will see several former Cougars in action as the men’s 200m starts competition. Barton will be represented in 4 of the 9 opening round heats. The 1st heat will have former Cougar Aaron Armstrong running for Trinidad and Tobago. Heat 3 will feature Steve Mullings of Jamaican as the fastest time in the heat this year at 20.01. Alonso Edward will bring the fastest time this year to heat 6 with his 20.00 while Tyson Gay bring the fastest time in the world this year to heat 7 with a 19.58. Gay is considered questionable at this time, nursing a groin injury for the past several weeks. He just ran a 10.71 for 2nd in the 100m. Quarterfinal action will be later in the day.
Sands will compete in the triple jump finals on Tuesday after posting the 4th best jump in the opening round of competition. Henry has run the 4th fastest time in the world this year in the 400m and will run in the 7th and final heat of the opening round. Semifinals for the 400m will be Wednesday.
Wednesday will not only have the 400m semifinals for Henry but will also feature the semifinals of the men’s 200m and the opening round of the women’s 200m which will have three former Cougars – Campbell, Simone Facey and Laverne Jones – all running. . Ryan Brathwaite will get started in the 110m hurdles for the men with opening round action.
