Gay sets US mark at 9.71, finishes 2nd to Bolt’s world record 9.58
Tyson Gay completed Sunday by running the 3rd fastest time ever in the 100m – but did not win the race. Gay, competing in the 12th annual IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Berlin, ran a United States record 9.71 in the finals but world record holder Usain Bolt bested his previous world record with a mind boggling time of 9.58. Bolt set the world record last year at the Olympics at 9.69. Other action Sunday saw former Cougars Leevan Sands reach the finals of the men’s triple jump while Veronica Campbell-Brown and Aleen Bailey both made the semifinals in the 100m.

Men’s 100m – Tyson Gay
Gay and Bolt worked their way to the showdown by breezing through the 1st and 2nd rounds Saturday and through the semifinals earlier Sunday. Gay ran a 9.93 in the semifinals in preparation for the showdown with Jamaican. In the finals, Bolt jumped out a great start and Gay stayed with him for a while but Bolt just proved too fast on Sunday, shattering his old record. The 0.11 he took off the world record is the largest amount the 100m record has ever been bested by.

The duo will hook up again in the 200m which gets underway Tuesday. They will be joined by Barton’s Alonso Edward and former Cougar Steve Mullings.

Men’s Triple Jump – Leevan Sands, Walter Davis
Sands – a bronze medal winner at the 2008 Olympics – easily moved into the 12-man finals of the triple jump. Sands finished the opening round with the 4th best jump, going 17.20 meters (56-6 1/4). The best jump in the opening round was by Nelson Evora of Portugal who jumped 17.44 (57-2 3/4). The finals will take place Tuesday.

Former Cougar Walter Davis did not make the finals with his jump of 16.62 (54-6 1/2). Davis had medaled at the past 3 World Championships, including a gold medal in 2005.

Women’s 100m – Veronica Campbell, Aleen Bailey
Campbell-Brown and Bailey worked their way to semifinals action set for Monday with the finals taking place Monday as well. Campbell-Brown had no trouble in advancing past the 1st 2 rounds, running an 11.34 in the opening round and a 10.99 in the quarterfinals – winning both of her heats. Bailey won her heat in the opening round with an 11.29 then took 2nd in her quarterfinal heat with an 11.12. The two will both run in the same semifinal heat.

Schedule
The lone Cougars competing Monday will be Campbell-Brown and Bailey. Tuesday will see several former Cougars in action as the men’s 200m starts as well as Tabarie Henry and the 400m for the men. Sands will compete in the triple jump finals Tuesday.
