Three Barton Community College track stars are spending time on the European Athletic Association circuit this summer with one getting some starts in the prestigious IAAF Grand Prix Series in Europe. The trio is preparing for the IAAF World Championships later this summer. The World Championships will take place in Berlin, Germany from August 15-23. All 3 will be there as well as several former Cougars.
Ryan Brathwaite was scheduled for 2 EAA outdoor meetings and a pair of Grand Prix meets. Alonso Edward and Tabarie Henry have both competed in EAA meets as well. Edward and Brathwaite have both set school records while competing this summer with Edward posting a 20.00 time in the 200m to move him into the top 5 in the world this year on Monday. Henry already posted a top 5 time in the 400m this spring at Barton. Brathwaite is among the top 10 in the world in the 110m high hurdles as well.

Both of those times entered the Top 5 in the world at 4 and 5. Former Cougar Tyson Gay has the fastest time in the world this year at 19.58, slightly ahead of Usain Bolt – the current world record holder. Also in the race and taking 3rd behind Edward and Mullings was LaShawn Merritt, who is the reigning gold medal winner in the 400m at the 2008 Olympics. The 20.00 broke Aaron Armstrong’s school record at Barton of 20.08. Edward ran in the 100m in the meet, taking 4th in 10.13. He has a season-best of 10.09 in the 100m.

In that event he edged Joel Brown (13.27) and former Cougar Dexter Faulk (13.29) for the gold. That time gave Brathwaite the 8th fastest time in the world this year.
In his most recent outing, Brathwaite ran a 13.26 to place 3rd in Rethysmon, Greece Monday. Defending Olympic gold medal winner Dayron Robles won the race in 13.17 with former Cougar Faulk 2nd in 13.18 in an EAA series event. Ironically, that time was 2nd to Latroy Williams, who ran a 44.73 for the 3rd fastest in the world. Defending 400m Olympic Gold medal winner LaShawn Merritt has clocked the fastest time this year at 44.5 with Jeremy Warner (2004 Olympic Gold Medal winner) 2nd at 44.66.
