Barton men and women roll to Region VI track and field titles
The Barton Community College track team cruised to Region VI outdoor titles on both the men’s and women’s side, winning by more than 70 points each. The men finished with 208 points to runner-up Butler’s 130. The women posted 200 points to runner-up Coffeyville’s 126. The Cougar men had both the track and field athlete of the meet on the men’s side and the field athlete of the meet on the women’s. Max Alonso won in the field for the men by capturing the discus and shot put. Alonso won the discus with a new Region VI record. Tabarie Henry earned the award on the track by winning a gold in the 200m and running on the Cougars’ winning 4x100m relay team. Jasmine Simmons earned the Athlete of the Meet in the field for the women as she doubled in the jumps winning the long jump by more than 1 foot and the triple jump by more than 4 feet.
Men
The Barton men won 11 of the 16 events the Cougars had entrants, placing no worse than 4th in any event. Alonso had an impressive meet, starting on Friday with the record in the discus. Alonso won by more than 20 feet with his throw of 180-0. Teammate Avery Griffin was 2nd at 157-9. The old record of 177-6 had stood since 1992 when another Cougar – x Gillette set the record. The next day Alonso won the shot put with a 55-5. Adrian Little took 3rd at 53-0. Barton didn’t complete its throwing sweep of the 3 events entered but placed 3 in the top 8 of the hammer including 2nd and 3rd. Griffin took his 2nd silver of the meet with a 159-11 in the hammer and Tommy Mauldin was 3rd at 157-11 – well behind the winning throw of 187-1.
The Cougars also won 2 of the 3 jumping events, capturing both horizontal jumps. Jarrod Hutchen missed the Region VI record held by former Olympian and Cougar Walter Davis of 26-5.25 but did top the 26-foot mark with a jump of 26-0.75 for the gold. Floyd Ross and Fred Brown went 1-2 in the triple jump with Ross winning with a jump of 49-4.25 and Brown taking 2nd at 49-0.75. Brown also took 3rd in the high jump at 6-6.75.
The Cougars dominated the sprints on the track winning the 100m, 200m, and 400m as well as the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Alonso Edward continued his dominance, winning the 100m in 10.19. The wind-legal time is among the Top 25 in the world the 1st time he has had a chance to run wind-legal this year. His 9.97 with a 2.3 wind earlier this year is the 4th fastest under any conditions. Edward does have a wind legal time of 20.40 in the 200m that is just outside the Top 10 in the world this year. Edward did not run the 200m but the Cougars still rolled there as Henry won the event. Henry, who is in the Top 10 in the world in the 400m, skipped his specialty event to run the 200m, which he won in 20.71. With Henry skipping the 400m, his cousin Remuro Henry won the event in 47.05 followed by DreDame Carter in 47.12.
Barton also swept the hurdles as Ryan Brathwaite repeated his title in the 110m hurdles. Brathwaite won in an easy time of 13.72, well off his Top 10 world time of 13.32. Brathwaite ran a 13.05 in windy conditions earlier this year which is the fastest in the world under any conditions. The Cougars doubled with a 1-2 finish in the 400m hurdles as Zac Carson won in 53.37 and Jeremy Wesley was 2nd in 53.52.
In the middle distances, Terry Charles took 3rd in the 800m in 1:52.31 and Dean Gonsalves was 4th in the 1500m in 3:58.59. The Cougars 4x800m relay team was 2nd.
Women
Simmons highlighted a powerful outing by the Cougar women with her double in the horizontal jumps. She won the long jump Friday, topping the 20-foot mark at 20-2.5 beating teammate Tiana Davis by more than 1 foot. Davis was 2nd at 18-10.0. The same tandem took 1-2 in the triple the next day as Simmons flew to a win by more than 4 1/2 feet. Simmons won with a leap of 41-10.5 to Davis’ 37-2.25. Davis tied for 2nd with that mark.
In the throwing events, Barton had a pair of throwers earn top 3 finishes including the gold medal in the javelin. Rachel Belesle won the javelin with throw of 133-4. Katie Gerhardt was 2nd in the discus at 137-3.
On the track, the Cougar women used the sprints to score several of its 200 points. Shaycoya Myers just missed the sprint double as she rolled to the win in the 100m in 11.75 and took 3rd in the 200m in 24.66. Sierra Chambers was 2nd in the 200m in 24.5. The Cougars went 1-2-4 in the 400m with Kayon Robinson winning in 56.14 and Hadassah Bruno taking 2nd in 56.66. The Cougars women also won the 4x100m and took 2nd in the 4x400m.
The Cougars won both hurdle races as well with April Williams winning the 100m in 13.77 and Davis getting her 3rd silver of the meet with a 14.08 for 2nd place. Barton’s Andrea Sutherland wont eh 400m hurdles by 4 seconds with her time of 1:01.06.
Barton’s Shelley Rolle gave the Cougars a middle distance win, capturing the 800m in 2:17.89 was part of Barton’s gold medal winning 4x800m relay team that won with a time of 9:20.63.
Matt Kane was named the Women’s Coach of the Year for Region VI.
