Cougar men and women take 2nd at NJCAA Indoor Championships
The Barton Community College indoor track teams took 2nd this past weekend at the NJCAA National Indoor Championships at Lubbock, Texas. The Cougars had some outstanding efforts at the meet including an NJCAA Championship record effort by Alonso Edward in the 200m. It tied the school record at Barton. Edward was also part of the men’s 4x400m relay team set a meet record as was Tabarie Henry who captured a pair of gold medals. The Cougar women won a pair of relays in the event. South Plains (Texas) won both the men’s and women’s NJCAA Indoor National Championships. The outdoor season gets started next weekend in Lindsborg at Bethany College with the Swede Invitational.

Highlights
Men
The Cougars set a pair of meet record highlighted by the blazing performance from Edward in the 200m. Edward turned the oval in 20.69 to set the NJCAA National Meet record by a full .20. The old mark was 20.89 set in 2006 by Trell Kimmons of Hinds College. Edward also put his name on top of the Barton school record list with that effort. Edward tied the mark of 20.69 ran by Olympic Silver Medal winner (2004) Bernard Williams in 1999. The time is the top time in the world this year on an oversized track and is the 5th fastest time in the world overall. Tabarie Henry was 3rd in the event in 21.09.

The 4x400m relay team of Remuro Henry, Edward, Terry Charles and Tabarie Henry also set the meet record with a 3:08.75, breaking the record of 3:08.91 set by Blinn College (Texas) nearly 20 years. Tabarie Henry joined Edward with a pair of golds by winning the 600m in a dual with Sharif Webb of South Plains. Henry won in 1:18.39 while Webb was 2nd in 1:18.68.

The Cougars were looking to grab gold in the 55m hurdles as well with 2008 Olympian Ryan Brathwaite the favorite. But after cruising to a 7.26 in the prelims, Brathwaite false started and was disqualified in the finals. The Cougars still went 2-3 in the event with James Carter taking 2nd in 7.38 and Malcolm Anderson 3rd in 7.45. South Plains’ Bryce Brown won in 7.34.

Rounding out the top 3 efforts on the track were Terry Charles in the 800m where he took 3rd in 1:54.04 and 3rd in the 4x800m relay in 7:50.07 despite dropping the baton.

Barton turned in some great efforts in the field as well, headlined by a 1-2-4 finish in the weight throw. Thomas Mauldin won the event with a 58-8.5 followed by a 57-5.75 effort from teammate Adrian Little. Avery Griffin was 4th at 52-10.25. Barton took 2nd and 3rd in the shot put with Max Alonso 2nd at 55-7.5 and Jimmie Pacifico taking 3rd at 54-9.25. In the jumps, Barton’s Jarrod Hutchen was 2nd in the long jump with a 25-foot even leap.

South Plains took 1st with 163 points to Barton’s 2nd place total of 130. Rend Lake (Ill) was a distant 3rd with 98 and Butler 4th with 57.

Women
The Cougar women also came up 2nd to South Plains College, racking up some very good efforts in the process. Barton’s Jasmine Simmons had a big meet for the Cougars in the field, earning a gold and bronze in the jumps. Simmons won the triple jump with a leap of 40-10.5, besting 2nd place by 3 inches. She came up just a bit short in the long jump, taking 3rd with a jump of 19-9.5. That just missed 2nd (19-9.75) but was 3 inches short of the winning leap of 20-0.5.

On the track April Williams and Andrea Southerland both had good meets for the Cougars. Williams turned in an NJCAA Record besting mark of 7.72 in the 55m hurdles but that was only good for 2nd as Essex’s Natasha Ruddock won in a blistering 7.66.

Southerland left the meet with two gold and two silver medals. Southerland took 2nd in both the 600m and 800m individually and ran on Baton’s winning 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams. In the 600m, Southerland just missed the gold running a 1:32.87 right behind the winning time of 1:32.65 by South Plains’ Shakeeri Cole. Shelleyeka Rolle was 3rd for the Cougars in 1:34.15. Southerland was also 2nd to Shakeeri in the 800m with a time of 2:22.32.

Southerland joined Rolle, Hadassah Bruno and Kayon Robinson to win the 4x400m relay in a time of 3:43.35 – nearly 3 seconds ahead of 2nd. Southerland and Rolle both ran on the 4x800m as well along with Alexandra Webster and Simone Buford for a time of 9:38.53 for the gold medal.

South Plains easily won the meet with 139.5 points to Barton’s 2nd place effort of 89. Butler was a close 3rd with 83.
