Campbell turns in fastest 100m this year in Jamaican National Meet
Former Barton County Community College Olympic Gold Medal winner Veronica Campbell continued to run among the elite sprinters in the world, turning in the fastest 100m in world this year during her gold medal efforts at the Jamaican National Championships recently. Campbell took the sprint double winning the 200m as well. She was one of several former Cougars who showed well at the event.
In all, 7 former Cougars competed but never was it more evident than when the 100m women lined up to run the finals. There 3 former Cougars were among the 8 running with a 4th ex Barton runner just missing out on the finals. Campbell was the top of all of them – and the world this year – with her 10.89 in the finals. That bettered Torri Edwards 10.90 ran earlier this year. Campbell owns the 3rd (10.91) and 4th (10.93) fastest times this year as well.
Simone Facey was 4th in the race at 11.16 and Tracey Ann Rowe was 6th in 11.32. Aleen Bailey was 9th, just missing a spot on the finals. Bailey did take 4th in the 200m in 22.88 where Campbell again rolled to a great outing, running a 22.39 for the gold and the 4th fastest time in the world this year behind 3 Americans, led by Allyson Felix with a 22.18.
Two former Cougar men ran in the finals during the Nationals with Steve Mullings competing in both the 100m and 200m finals. Mullings took 4th in the 100m finals in 10.12 and 5th in the 200m finals in 20.54. Omar Brown was 6th in the 200m finals in 20.72. Rounding out the former Cougars competing this year at the Jamaican Nationals was Shellene Williams who made it to the semifinals of the women’s 400m dash where she ran 54.54.
Elsewhere in the Caribbeans, former Cougar Leevan Sands took 1st in the triple jump and 2nd the long jump at the Bahamian Nationals. Sands jumped 54-2.75 to win the triple jump and went 25-5.25 in the long jump for 2nd. LeJaun Simon was 1st in the long jump at the Trinidad & Tobago Championships at 25-4.75. Aaron Armstrong also ran in the Trinidad & Tobago Championships, taking 2nd in the 200m in 20.99.
