Patterson
wins 400m hurdles for Cougars at John Jacobs
The Barton County Community College women’s track team continues
to wrack up the medals as the outdoor season moves along. The Cougars
traveled to the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla. Saturday
to compete in the event on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
The Cougars Veronia Patterson captured a gold medal in a new event
and several other Cougars took silver and bronze in the meet that
featured several region NCAA Division I schools.
Highlights
Veronia Patterson – a 400m runner for the Cougars –continued
her successful cross over to jumping hurdles while running the 400m
with a win at the John Jacobs. Patterson won the race in 1:00.22.
She finished 4th in 1:03.09 at the Texas-Arlington Invitational
two weeks ago in her inaugural running of the event. Keisha Brown
added silver in the 100m hurdles, taking 2nd in 13.73, well ahead
of 3rd place.
Juanita
Broaddus picked up a silver and bronze on the day, placing 2nd in
the 200m and 3rd in the 100m. Broaddus was 2nd to Olympian and former
Cougar Laverne Jones in the 200m. Jones ran unattached and won the
event in 23.14. Broaddus was 2nd in 23.30. Jones also won the 100m
in 11.43 with Broaddus 3rd in 11.58. The 4x400m relay team took
2nd as well to Baylor.
In
the field, Barton took 2nd and 3rd in the high jump with Shaunette
Davidson placing 2nd at 5-8.75 and Portia Nash 3rd at 5-7. Nash
added a 3rd place effort in the triple jump and Brown did likewise
in the long jump. Carly Bloomfield, the defending champion in the
javelin at the NJCAA Championships, was 2nd at the John Jacobs with
a throw of 130-11.
