Brew
joins Moffitt on US Olympic Team; 3 in triple jump finals
This
list of former Barton County Cougars set to compete in the 2004
Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece had now hit double figures.
Derrick Brew made the number 10 when he finished 3rd in the 400m
dash at the United States Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Calif. and
earned the right to make his 1st trip to the Olympics. He joins
John Moffitt as former Cougars on the US Olympic Team with 8 more
from other countries already qualified.
Brew,
a veteran in his race with several collegiate runners, ran a 44.69
to edge out Baylor’s Darold Williamson for the 3rd and final
spot in the event. Williamson ran a 4.70. Baylor’s Jeremy
Wariner won the race in 44.37 – the fastest 400m time in the
world this year. Brew’s 44.69 in the 8th fastest time. Brew,
who won the NJCAA 400m indoor and outdoor as a sophomore at Barton
in 1998, will also be part of the 4x400m relay team as well for
USA.
In
other action Thursday from Sacramento, the triple jump was a great
event for former Barton County jumpers. Walter Davis, an Olympian
in 2000, qualified for the finals in the triple jump with the 2nd
best prelim jump. Davis will be joined in the finals Saturday by
former Cougars Tim Rusan and Erick Newby. Davis jumped 56-11.5 in
his preliminary jumps for the 2nd best effort while Rusan jumped
55-1.5 for the 5th best effort. Newby just did make the field of
12 with a 53-6.25 effort for the 12th and final spot. The finals
will take place Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
LaQuanda
Cotton threw in the finals of the hammer throw Thursday but failed
to earn a trip to Greece, placing 11th overall at 205-3. She scratched
from the shot put qualifying earlier in the day.
Today
will see the 200m qualifying begin with Bernard Williams, Tyson
Gay, and Aaron Armstrong all running as former Barton stars on the
men’s side while LaShauntea Moore and Monique Hall will run
for the women.
