Davis
moves into Triple Jump finals; Sands, Simon come up short
Walter
Davis did what he needed to do on his final jump of the preliminary
triple jump competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Davis got off
a jump of 55-7 on his final attempt to move him into the top 12
and the finals of the triple jump held in Athens, Greece. Leevan
Sands and LeJuan Simon were not as fortunate, failing to make the
finals, which will be held Sunday.
The
trio of former Barton County Community College Cougars, all jumping
the Group A, struggled early. Davis jumped 53-5 his first jump then
struggled with a jump of less than 49 feet on his 2nd attempt. Meanwhile
Sands, a bronze medalist in the 2003 World Championships, scratched
on his first two attempts. Simon also scratched on his first attempt
then jumped a very low 48-4.5 on his 2nd attempt.
Finally,
Davis hit just enough stride to get the 55-7 jump off and move up
to 11th on his final effort of the day. The story wasn’t as
good for Sands and Simon. Sands went 53-7.75 on his final effort
and Simon 53-0. Those weren’t good enough to move on as the
12th and final spot was 55-3.25.
The
finals will have the 12 qualifiers starting from scratch Sunday
at 12:30 pm CDT. Television coverage of the event will be tape-delayed
on NBC Sunday evening. It is the 2nd straight Olympics that Davis
has made the finals, taking 11th place at the 2000 Sydney Games.
Sands
and Simon still have the long jump competition that gets started
Tuesday. Davis and another former Cougars, John Moffitt, will also
compete in the event giving the former Cougars 10 percent of the
Olympic field.
