Brew,
USA win 4x400m finals
Derrick
Brew capped off what has been a memorable, if not unbelievable 2004
Summer Olympics for former Barton County Community College track
and field stars. Brew hauled in the 9th and final medal for former
Cougars with a gold medal effort as part of the United States men's
4x400m relay team. Brew and his 3 USA teammates combined to capture
the gold at the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens. That give former Cougars
5 gold, 2 silver, and 2 brone medals from the Olympics. For Brew,
it was his 2nd medal of the games and his first Olympic Gold medal
ever.
Brew and his teammates covered the four laps in
2:55.91 to win by a large margin. The 2nd place team of Australia
finished in more than 3 minutes. Brew was joined on the team by
Otis Harris, Darold Wiliamson, and Jeremy Wariner for the gold medal
winning time. They just missed the Olympic record of 2:55.74. Nigeria
took the bronze medal.
Former Cougars have wrapped up their stint in Athens
with 5 gold medals (Veronica Campbell, 200m; Campbell, Aleen Bailey,
Beverly McDonald, 4x100m relay; Brew, 4x400m relay), 2 silver medals
(John Moffitt, long jump; Bernard Williams, 200m), and two bronze
medals (Campbell, 100m; Brew, 400m).
