Brew wins 400m semi heat; runs in Finals Monday
Derrick Brew left little doubt about his place in the finals of the men's 400m dash at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Brew, a former Barton County Community College track star, won his semifinal heat Saturday to assure himself of a spot in the finals Monday.

Brew cruised in with a 45.05 to win the 2nd heat with ease. The 2nd place time 45.27 with the top 2 finishers in each of the 3 heats moving on as well as the next 3 best times. It was the 2nd win for Brew in the preliminary action as he won his quarterfinal heat as well on Friday.

"I felt good and controlled the race," Brew said his his post-race intervew. "I wasn't worried about my time. I just wanted to advance to the finals and go for the gold. I ran the heat like yesterday. I have one more round. This is the final, which I've been waiting for all year."

"I changed coaches this year and am working with Antonio Pettigrew (2000 4x400 relay gold medallist) who is a veteran in this race and it has worked out good for me the whole year.

Brew ended the semifinals with the 6th best overall time. He will be one of 3 Americans in the 400m finals, joining Jeremy Wariner and Otis Harris. The 3 will all run in the middle of track with Brew running in lane 3, Wariner lane 4, and Harris lane 5. The finals will start at 1:10 pm Monday.
