Brew
headed to 400m semis with win in quarters
Derrick
Brew joined 3 other former Barton County Community College Cougars
with a good opening day of competition at the 2004 Summer Olympic
Games in Athens, Greece. Brew breezed to a win in his heat of the
400m quarterfinals, earning a spot in Saturday’s semifinals.
Brew joins Veronica Campbell and Aleen Bailey (women’s 100m)
as ex Cougars in the semifinals as well as Walter Davis in the finals
of the triple jump after the opening day of competition.
Brew won the 4th
heat of the quarterfinals, the opening round of competition for
the men’s 400m. He was one of 2 USA runners to win their heat
as all 3 moved into the semis. Brew did so in 45.41, just ahead
of Brandon Simpson’s 45.61. The top 2 runners in each of the
8 heats as well as the next 8 fastest times move into the 24-man
semifinals. Brew completed the opening round with the 10th overall
fastest time in the event.
The
semifinals will take place at 1 pm (CDT) Saturday with 3 heats of
8. Only 8 runners of the 24 racing in the semis will advance to
the finals on Monday. Brew will run in the 2nd heat.
