Campbell earns gold medal in Olympic 200m
Veronica Campbell saw her dream become a reality Wednesday night in Athens, Greece. Campbell’s dream of an Olympic Gold medal came to fruition as she bested the rest of the world in the 200m dash of the 2004 Summer Olympics. With that win Campbell also becomes the 1st former Barton County Cougar to win an individual gold medal. She now has two medals (bronze in the 100m) to her credit during these games and another from the 2000 Sydney Games as part of Jamaica’s 4x100m silver medal winning relay team. Campbell will also run in the 4x100m this year. Another ex Cougar almost earned a medal as well as Aleen Bailey came up just short, taking 4th in the event.

Campbell once again ran the best time in the world this year – she now has the top 3 efforts of 2004 – as she ran a 22.05 to capture the gold medal. Allyson Felix of the USA took 2nd in a 22.18. Debbie Ferguson of the Bahamas came in with the bronze at 22.30.

“ I studied the others' races, especially to beat Allyson Felix,” Campbell said in the post race press conference. “That's why I took off at the start and ran a hard curve." I'd been expecting the gold. I knew with the perfect race I would win for sure.

"I've been dreaming all my life to get an individual Olympic medal and today I did it. I'm very proud. I'm very happy."

Bailey just missed out on her 1st-ever Olympic medal, placing 4th in the event with a time of 22.42. She was well ahead of the 5th place effort 22.57 turned in by the 100m champion, Ivet Lalova. Bailey took 5th in the 100m. Bailey will get another chance to snag a medal as part of the Jamaican 4x100m relay team.

"I'm not sad, there's a lot of stuff I need to work on and I didn't expect to win here,” Bailey said. “In fact, I'm just happy to be in an Olympic final."

The gold medal by Campbell now gives former Cougars 3 medals from the XXVIII Olympiad. In addition to Campbell two medals, Derrick Brew won a bronze medal in the 400m for the United States. The Cougars had 3 medal winners previous to the 2004 Summer Games -- all in relay events -- including a gold medal for Bernard Williams as a member of the USA men's 4x100m relay team in 2000. That was the 1st gold medal ever won by a former Barton County Cougar.
