Williams
rolls into semifinal of men’s 200m
Bernard
Williams had very little trouble advancing past the 1st 2 rounds
and into the semifinals of the Men’s 200m dash at the 2004
Summer Olympics. Williams, a 1999 graduate of Barton County Community
College, rolled to wins during his 1st 2 heats of the event with
some of the best times posted during the day. The semifinals will
be run tomorrow with the finals slated for Thursday. Williams and
the other 2 USA runners all advanced, giving the United State 2
semifinalist in the event.
Williams
coasted to the win in the quarterfinals, capturing Heat 2, in 20.40.
That was the 10th best time of the quarterfinals with the best time
going to fellow American Shawn Crawford in 19.95. That time is the
3rd fastest in the world this year.
In
the 1st round, Williams breezed to a 20.29 to win Heat 6 by a comfortable
margin. That time was the fastest turned in during the opening round
of running along with Stephane Buckland of Mauritius, who also ran
a 20.29. The next fastest time was a 20.40.
"I
am here to do the best I can,” Williams said after his opening
round in a post race press conference. “In the final I'll
prove it. Now I just wanted to run relaxed and easy, but you have
to be careful, the other guys are trying their best, too."
Williams
will run in Heat 1 of the semifinals with Crawford. The semifinals
will be run at 2:55 pm Wednesday. The finals will be run Thursday.
