Campbell, Bailey move into 100m semifinals
Veronica Campbell and Aleen Bailey have two important steps down on what they hope is their way to an Olympic medal in the women’s 100m. Campbell and Bailey – both running for their homeland of Jamaica – moved past the 1st round and the quarterfinals Friday at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and into tomorrow’s semifinal round. The finals will be held tomorrow as well. LaVerne Jones wasn’t as fortunate, getting out of the 1st round but not advancing past the quarterfinals. Campbell and Bailey’s presence in the 100m semis will give Barton County Community College 2 former Cougars among the field of 16 remaining.

Campbell was the 1st to earn her trip to the semifinals, placing 2nd in the 1st heat of the quarterfinals. The top 3 from each of the 4 quarterfinals automatically earn a trip to the semis as well as the 4 next fastest times. Campbell’s heat was the slowest of the four heats, allowing her to coast to an 11.18 for the 2nd spot and place in the semifinals. Jones also ran in the 1st heat, placing 6th in 11.44, not good enough to move on. Notables in the 1st heat included Gail Devers, who took 4th with an 11.31 – good enough to move into the semis.

Bailey also advanced with very little trouble in the 3rd heat, clocking an 11.12 to place in that heat as well. Fellow Jamaican Sherone Simpson won in 11.09 with the rest of the field well behind the front-runners. Merlene Ottey, a long-time Jamaican entrant in the event but now running for Slovenia took 3rd in the heat to move into the semis as well.

Bailey ended the semis with the 6th best effort and Campbell with 9th best time. Campbell will run in the 1st heat of the semifinals. That heat will have 3 runners that have already run a sub 11.0 100m this year. Bailey will get the 2nd heat with along with country-mate Simpson and the top 2 American runners.

In the opening round, Campbell and Bailey each won their heat. Bailey ran in the 1st heat, coasting in with an 11.2 for the heat win and a spot in the quarters. Campbell and Jones both ran in heat 6, a heat with quality names. Campbell won the heat in 11.17 followed by 2001 World Champion Zhanna Block of Ukraine in 11.25. Two-time Olympic Gold Medal winner Devers was 3rd in the heat at 11.29 to automatically earn a spot in the quarters. Jones’ time of 11.38 was one of the 8 top times after the automatic qualifiers to earn her spot in the quarters.
