Cougars qualify for Olympics with impressive showings

Several former members of the Barton County Community College track and field team already have punched tickets to Athens, Greece and the 2004 Summer Olympics later this summer. Five ex Barton runners earned that right with some strong showings at the Jamaican Senior National Championships this past weekend. Steve Mullings, Veronica Campbell, Aleen Bailey, Beverly McDonald, and Suzette Lee all qualified to be part of the Jamaican team in Athens. During the meet, Campbell ran the fastest 200m in the world this year. That accomplishment earned her the Women’s MVP of the meet.

Perhaps the most impressive outing was turned in by Campbell, who won both the 100m and 200m at the Championships. The Barton County record holder in both events, ran a blistering 11.06 into a –1.1 wind to win the 100m. Bailey finished 2nd in the race and McDonald 4th. Bailey ran an 11.21 and McDonald an 11.36. All 3 will more than likely be part of the Jamaican 4x100m relay team.

Campbell, part of the Cougars 2002 and 2003 teams, made it a double with a 22.18 effort to win the 200m. That time is the best 200m in the world this year. In that race Bailey, who ran with the Cougars in 2000 and 2001, took 2nd in 22.70 and McDonald, a member of the 1990 and 1991 Cougars, was 3rd in 22.85. That gave the former Cougars a sweep of the event.

Not to be outdone was Mullings, who took 2nd in the 100m then turned around and won the 200m. Mullings’ time of 10.04 into a slight headwind was 2nd in the 100m to an outstanding run of 9.91 by Asafa Powell. The 9.91 by Powell is the 2nd fastest time in the world this year while Mullings’ effort of 10.04 was the 6th fastest. Mullings found a bit of revenge in the 200m as he once again ran the 6th fastest time in the world with a blistering 20.22. Powell did not run in the race.

Lee, another veteran that participated for Barton in 1994 and 1995, earned her spot in the Olympic team with a triple jump of 45-11 to take 2nd in that event.

The Cougars also had some former athletes just miss out on a spot on the Jamaican Olympic team as Kareen Gayle (4th in the 400m), Aneita Denton (7th – 400m), and Chris Pinnock (5th – 110m hurdles) all made it to the finals of their events.

The Olympics will take place from Aug. 11-29 with track and field events running from the 20-29.
